Fujitsu fi-7280 Review | Now with Flatbed | Is it worth the $ ?

The Fujitsu Fi-7280 color duplex document scanner is a great scanning equipment which fits on just about any desk

It does not a fortune and it also features an A4 flatbed unit, besides the 60ppm ADF

If you have a lower budget, then you can easily try the Fi-7260 or the Fi-7240, which do the same things, at lower speed and lower price.

Fujitsu fi-7280 Datasheet Explained

Starting off with the scanning dimension, the Fujitsu fi-7280 image scanner will process documents up to 8.27 in x 11.69 in.

Just like most Fi scanners, this model can achieve an optical resolution 1200 dpi when you enable it through the Paperstream Ip driver.

I really love the CCD sensor and the fact that most FI series scanners come with this kind of chip. It provides good scanning results and offers a greater scanning depth, which works very well, even for embossed card scanning projects.

The Fi7280 scanners connect to your computer using a high-speed USB 3.0 plug. This means that even for large color, grayscale images, the transfer should be pretty quick.

The rated scan speed in the product description is around 80ppm in simplex. Enable the duplex scanning and you should produce around 160 images every minute. Using the Paperstream IP driver this means that the speed is identical for color, grayscale and bitonal images.

Scanning 6,000 documents should not be a problem, given this equipment’s daily Recommended volume.

The recommended volume for this device is around 6000 documents. This might not seem a lot, but remember that the machine comes with a flatbed included, therefore it’s suited to versatility rather than quantity.

Both the Twain and ISIS interfaces are available with the current FI drivers, so integrating them into your custom app is quite easy.

You can assume the rollers will get close to 200.000 pages for standard paper, before letting go.

Specs for paper handling

The Multifeed Detection on the scanner works by using an Ultrasonic Sensor. This intelligent sonic protection works for both ways, first for detecting multi feeds and second to protect from immediate jams. Length detection is also a great addon for double feed detection.

The automatic document feeder ADF will hold around 80 pages that are not thicker than 80gsm.

When it comes to the Document thickness the Fujitsu fi-7280 is capable of handling paper from 7.2 to 112 lb. Given a straight scanning path, you might also be able to do embossed card scanning and plastic card scanning just as well.

As with most FI scanners, the long page scanning mode is not missing, and you will scan documents that are 220 in. long.

Fujitsu fi-7280 accessories unboxing

The equipment dimension is close to 12 x 9 x 9 inches.

The Fujitsu fi-7280 weighs around 19.4 lbs. This mass doesn’t include any optional that can be fitted to the device.

In regards to the bundled scanning software, the Fujitsu fi-7280 comes with the PaperStream IP driver and the advanced PaperStream Capture software. These will work on both the 32 and the 64bit windows server or the standard operating system.

The administration tools, such as the Software Operation Panel and Scanner central admin software are also included in the bundle.

Last but not least, you will find the ScanSnap Manager for fi Series and the AbbyFinereader Express OCR solution.

Features for Productivity

I love using the biggest scanning size and just enable the Auto Crop , especially for mixed documents.

I like the Automated Rotation of Documents for documents that are not homogenous when it comes to orientation. A mix of portrait and landscape documents will be handled by the Automated Rotation of Documents mode.

It’s always a nice thing to have colored documents detected automatically. A Fujitsu fi-7280 offers this function as standard through its driver.

You have probably heard of the Blank document removal setting. Well, it will be available with this scanner so we recommend you enable it.

As you’d imagine, the MultiStream is featured in the Fujitsu fi-7280 driver settings. It can be a lifesaver some of the time.

Quality of images

With the Fujitsu fi-7280, you can expect perfect image cleanup. Just enable the Background Cleaning and let it do its magic.

I prefer using the Edge Correction setting mostly for text documents. I would not use it for photos, even though the Paperstream IP driver is one of the most advanced image cleanup solutions on the market.

When you have poor quality paper going through the Fujitsu fi-7280, just keep the Deskew active and you should have perfectly aligned pages.

Hole Punch Removal is interesting to use as it provides you with clean images on the perforated side.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to run the Fujitsu fi-7280 with the Streaks Filtering enabled, especially for standard documents.

Extra Features

Can you use the Fujitsu fi-7280 to scan really old documents? It should work if you enable the Manual Feeding settings.

I can’t imagine scanning without Barcode Recognition. It really is a good separation or indexing method.

As you probably know, Separating Documents Automatically can be done with Barcodes. Patch codes and also white pages.

The OCR is standard with this scanner and you can run it through the AbbyFinereader Express or the Paperstream Capture Software.

Have you worked with Zonal OCR ? Try it, especially for standardized forms it should do miracles.
