The Fujitsu Fi-7280 is the best ADF Flatbed Scanner that we know. This model is basically an ADF scanner for a document size of A4 attached to the top of a flatbed scanner. It uses a CCD (Charge-coupled device) sensor with an optical resolution of 1200 dpi without any interpolation, which is certainly superior to other document scanners. It will bring out very fine details in photos and the characters in the text will be rendered very smooth. However, in our tests we have noticed that there is no improvement in Optical Character Recognition accuracy from a pixel density of 600 dots per inch to 1200 dots per inch. The 1200 dpi resolution and 48-bits internal color bit depth make this a strong photo scanner. It has a scan speed of 80 sheets per minute, it is actually faster than all other scanners we feature in this article. With these fast scanning speeds, you can digitize 160 images per minute in duplex mode. The auto document feeder ADF capacity allows you to scan stacks of up to 80 sheets at a time.

Fujitsu recommends that the daily scanning volume should be at most 6,000 sheets. You can scan any paper size up to A4 and also extra long documents up to 220 inches. It will connect to your computer via a USB 3.0 port, no network connectivity. It has TWAIN and ISIS drivers so you can use it with other scanning apps, not just the ones that the manufacturer provides. It comes with the following software bundled in: PaperStream IP, PaperStream Capture, ScanSnap Manager for fi Series. This software comes with ICE image correction and image enhancement features like automatic cropping, color detection, image rotation that will save you a lot of time spent in Photoshop afterwards. The included software also comes with Optical Character Recognition so that you can export your documents to Searchable PDF.

Fujitsu included some scanning software with this duplex combo flatbed document scanner: PaperStream IP, PaperStream Capture, Fujitsu ScanSnap Manager for fi Series. The software is for document scanners for PC and Mac.

It s compatible with both major operating systems, Windows and Mac OS X and you can export the digital images in the following file formats: The PaperStream Capture application allows you to save your digital scans in the following formats: PDF, PDF/A, PDF with OCR, TIFF Group 4, Multipage TIFF, JPEG and Bitmap.

If you don’t need a flatbed unit anymore, then the Fujitsu ScanSnap IX1500 is a great alternative and the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i is the perfect mobile version of this image scanner.

The Kodak i2900 is the second ADF Flatbed scanner that we will be reviewing here. It uses the same type of CCD sensor but with an image resolution of 600dpi. In our tests we always prefered the image quality from the CCD sensor in comparison to the CIS (Contact Image Sensor) especially when it comes to color depth and dynamic range. But it does have a higher daily scanning volume of 10,000 sheets per day. The scanning speed is a bit lower too, at 60 sheets per minute with single pass duplex. It has the same type of connectivity as the Fujitsu but the USB port is slower, it is just a USB 2.0 port. The automatic document feeder ADF tray can hold 250 documents in it at any given time.

Like the Fujitsu, this desktop document scanning device also has an A4 flatbed scanning glass integrated into it. You just open the top cover and the scanning glass is there, it is a functional design. This is great for fragile documents which you will almost certainly have in your scanning projects. The feed rollers on this scanner with document feeder will last for 250,000 sheets, so they should last you 1-2 years at least. It can scan any paper that is between 9 to 110 lb. thick.

This sheet fed ADF flatbed scanner has all the TWAIN, ISIS and WIA drivers that you need to integrate it with custom scanning apps. This scanner has an ultrasonic sensor that detects multifeed (When more than one sheet of paper is fed into the scanner).

The scanner software includes Kodak Capture Desktop, Perfect Page Technology and Smart Touch. OCR technology is included with the software to help you convert your scanned documents to searchable PDFs and Word Documents. The software also includes ICE image correction features to improve the scanned images such as automatic cropping, deskew, rotation and blank page detection. It can recognize barcodes printed in documents and also pages that are blank which can then be automatically removed. The software that comes with this duplex scanner is also capable of uploading your documents automatically to Google Drive, Dropbox and Evernote.

The Epson Workforce DS-1630 flatbed color document scanner is also an ADF Flatbed Scanner. This model has one of the best designs as it has the ADF integrated seamlessly in the flatbed cover. The maximum scan size is A4. This scanner has a much slower scanning speed of 25 sheets per minute for two-sided documents and an ADF tray that will hold 50 sheets in it. The daily scanning volume that Epson recommends is 50 sheets. It has weaker specs than the first two but it does cost less. The optical resolution of the CCD sensor mounted on it is 600 dpi. The resolution for the flatbed and ADF is different. If you use the flatbed unit with the LED light source, the resolution is 1200 dpi.

This Flatbed Scanner with ADF connects through SuperSpeed USB cable (version 3.0) and optionally you can buy it with an ethernet connection. What I really enjoy is the software bundle: Epson Document Capture, Epson Document Capture Pro, Server Epson Document Capture Pro, Epson Scan 2 and ABBYY FineReader. There are a few document management features in the software application package but not much. The DS-1630 document scanner uses the ABBYY OCR software which from our tests has always proven to have the best OCR accuracy available on the market. It is superior in every way to the software created by Nuance and Readiris. An OCR scanner with ABBYY will always outperform other scanners with different software.

The Epson DS-60000 may not have the speed of the Fujitsu but it does have a very generous ADF tray that can hold 200 sheets and it also an A3 Flatbed ADF Scanner with Automatic Document Feeder which means you can feed a larger variety of paper sizes into the scanner. You will be able to digitize without interruption for feeding the papers again and the speed difference won’t be as big. You will be quickly scanning A3 prints with this device because the scanning speed is up to 40 sheets per minute and 80 images per minute if you use the scanner in duplex scanning mode. Large A3 prints can go in the ADF tray and smaller items like id cards on the flatbed scanning glass.

It connects through USB 2.0 just like most sheetfed scanners, but you can turn this into a network scanner if you purchase the optional network package.

This color duplex document scanner with flatbed connects to your computer via USB and you can also purchase optional ethernet connectivity. It is considerably heavier than the other scanners and it should be because it’s a large A3 flatbed ADF scanner. The software package contains the following: ABBYY FineReader Sprint 8.0, ABBYY FineReader Sprint 9.0 to create searchable PDF files, Epson Document Capture Pro, Server Epson Document Capture Pro, Epson Event Manager, Epson Scan, EpsonNet Config. It was a great decision from Epson to include the ABBYY OCR engine with this desktop scanner.

What is the best flatbed scanner with ADF to buy?

By all standards, we consider the Fujitsu Fi-7280 to be the best all-rounder in terms of specs, power, speed and customer experience. The Epson DS-60000 is well suited for projects where you don’t need the speed as much as you need the versatility. Missing from the list are the hp scanjet pro f1 flatbed ocr scanners which are good products, but not good enough to make this particular list.
