The Fujitsu Fi-7180 is the first document scaner with 80 PPM that we will be taking a closer look at. It has a high resolution imaging sensor that can scan at a pixel density of 1200 dpi. From our tests, 1200 dpi will not bring any benefit in the Optical Character Recognition accuracy but it does bring benefits in terms of more detail in your scanned JPEG and Bitmap images. It’s worth mentioning that this is not interpolation, it is the actual optical resolution of 1200dpi.

It uses a CCD sensor (Charge-Coupled Device) which is usually superior to CIS sensors in terms of dynamic range and has a wider RGB color gamut. It can only connect to your Windows Computer or Mac through USB 3.0 just like regular office products. This is a place where Fujitsu could have brought more with a simple wireless connection, but to keep up with the 80 PPM speed, the USB is the port to use. The automatic document feeder ADF capacity is exactly like the speed, 80 sheets. The paper feed system uses the intelligent sonic paper protection for multifeed detection. The scanner stops when the sensor triggers the double feed detection error.

The document capture software included in the package with the document scanner consists of PaperStream IP, PaperStream Capture, ScanSnap Manager for fi Series, Scanner Central Admin Suite and you can use this scanner with both operating systems. This scanner has automatic cropping, rotation, deskew and all the Image correction features that a document scanner should be equipped with. They will save the user a large amount of time that otherwise would have been wasted in Photoshop manually correcting the digital images. This color duplex scanner can also read 2d barcodes, which is useful for metadata and document separation, essential features for document management.

You can scan any paper size up to A4 in this 80 PPM scanner and even if the document is extra-long, it won’t be an issue as you can digitize documents up to 220 inches. Fujitsu say that the recommended number of documents scanned per day should not exceed 6,000. If you are looking for an A3 version of this fujitsu image scanner from the same manufacturer, have a look at the Fujitsu fi-7480, a high-speed scanner with similar specs but a higher document size. The scanner is compatible with Windows 10, Windows Server and Mac OS X.

The Fujitsu Fi-7280 is the second Document Scanner with a scanning performance of 80 PPM and is very similar to the Fujitsu 7180. They both are 80 PPM document scanners, it too has the 1200 dpi CCD sensor but this Fujitsu has a special advantage. It also comes with an integrated flatbed scanner. So this is a very versatile document scanner because you can put fragile documents in the flatbed while keeping everything in the same workflow.

If you have a flatbed and an ADF scanner separately, you can’t integrate them into the same app, so you have to use different apps and also even if you want something as simple as placing the scans in the same folder, you have to establish a correct naming convention and include the date, because you can’t rely on counters since they are at a different point for each scanner. We discovered all this ever since we started our digitization center.

The connectivity option is the same via USB cable, none of these 80 PPM scanners are network scanners. Network series scanners are usually slower and more flexible in software and options. Workgroup scanners allow more people to use them in an easier way and high-speed scanners are meant to be used by one user with a focus on productivity, quality image processing and nothing else. That’s why the capture software on the Fi series is more advanced and faster than what you would find on compact desktop scanners like the ScanSnap IX1500 touch screen scanner. Fi series scanners also have a less known feature with which you can scan wide format documents by folding them and scanning each face separately, then the software stitches them together into one big drawing.

In terms of specifications with this color document scanner, it’s exactly the same as the Fujitsu 7180 so we will not dive deeper into the datasheet of this 80 PPM scanner. If you put these 2 scanners side-by-side you will notice the ADF scanner part is identical.

The Panasonic is a different type of 80 PPM Document Scanner. Yes, the speed is the same, 80 PPM color and black & white and 160 IPM in duplex scanning mode but from there on things are different. This is an A3 document scanner which puts it in a different league. You can scan documents twice as large and that opens up new opportunities. We actually use a Panasonic scanner similar to this one in our digitization center all the time. This automatic document scanner has a CCD sensor with an image resolution of 600 dots per inch. In long document mode you can capture a document that’s up to 100 inches long. It only connects through USB 3.0, something that is very specific to this type of production scanners. None of them are wireless scanners because the network couldn’t keep up with the scanning speed.

This 80 PPM scanner has TWAIN and ISIS drivers for integration with multiple scanning apps and Google Drive integration from the Image Capture Plus software. The same software also allows for integration with Dropbox, Evernote and OneDrive. The scanning software package includes: Device Driver, ISIS driver software, TWAIN driver software, User Utility, Scan Button Setting Tool, Image Capture Plus with the New OCR Engine, Operation manual, Control sheet (PDF). In this software bundle they have included the Optical Character Recognition feature too, that allows you to convert a scanned image to searchable PDF or Microsoft Word, where the text is editable and searchable.

It has all the automatic image correction features like cropping, deskew, background removal, etc. The device also uses ultrasonic sensors to detect multifeed and it has some very reliable feed rollers that will last 350,000 scans. The device is energy star certified so it has a low power consumption. Another option from Panasonic is the Panasonic KVS-5046h scanner.

The Visioneer Patriot H80 is the last document scanner with 80 PPM speed. It has an ADF tray size of 120 sheets, it can scan up to 10,000 documents per day as long as they have a paper size of up to A4. The image resolution produced by its CCD sensor is 600 dpi, it connects like other scanners using USB 3.0 and it also offers all the TWAIN, ISIS and WIA drivers. Visioneer recommends that you scan up to 10,000 sheets per day on this document scanner. At a speed of 80 PPM, it will take you just 125 minutes of continuous scanning to reach that limit. Also, since the size of the ADF tray is just 120 sheets, it will take you approximately 90 seconds to scan all the sheets in it. It is a surprisingly fast speed for a document scanner. This 80 PPM scanner comes with a solid software bundle: Visioneer Acuity, Visioneer OneTouch, Nuance OmniPage Ultimate, Nuance PaperPort, Nuance Power PDF.
