Fujitsu fi-7180 Review | A great scanner just got faster!

The Fujitsu Fi7180 color duplex document scanners are benefiting from a speed upgrade over their smaller brother

This is a bit faster at 80ppm therefore it will empy the automatic document feeder almost 50% faster

We really love this scanner even if it’s a bit more expensive than the Fi7160, but if you find one bundled with the Paperstream Capture Pro free, buy it, it’s definitely a steal.

Fujitsu fi-7180 Datasheet Explained

This equipment is capable of digitizing a document that is around 8.27 in by 11.69 in. By ISO standards this is a normal A4 or even a letter document.

Compared to some of its competitors, the optical resolution can get up to 1200dpi. Coupled with a CCD sensor, for some those rare high resolution scans, this should work great.

The Fujitsu image scanner FI7180 connects through an USB 3.0 port. This means quick data transfer especially with newer 32 or 64bit Windows Server or Standard operating systems.

The scanning speeds have increased to 80 pages per minute when scanning simplex and 160ipm when scanning duplex. As you already know, with Fujitsu scanners the scan speed is similar whether you are scanning color, grayscale and monochrome documents.

As you would expect, the daily duty cycle definitely matches the scanning speed and is as high as 6000 sheets every single day.

Connecting the Paperstream Capture Pro to the scanner is done through either an ISIS or TWAIN Paperstream Ip driver. The scanner central admin software can handle both interfaces.

The feeding tires will be able to process close to 200.000 documents that are made of standard paper. Of course, this will vary based on paper type and also paper weights.

Specs for paper handling

As with just about any professional scanner the Ultrasonic Detection sensor will detect 99.99% of the double feeds you have. The length detection can be activated in parallel and will be double-checking these multi feeds along with the Overlap sensor.

If you are wondering what the ADF size is, well we can tell you that it is around 80.

The maximum Document thickness this device will process is around 7.2 to 112 lb. The best part about it is that you also have a special scanning mode that can scan plastic cards up to 1.4 mm thickness.

The Fi 71xx scanner series has a long document scanning mode that goes up all the way to 220 inches. There are some restrictions based on resolutions but don’t worry, in most cases, it should be fine.

Fujitsu fi-7180 accessories unboxing

The exact size of this device should be 12 x 6 x 6 inches.

The Fujitsu fi-7180 weighs about 19.4 lbs. This weight should not include the packaging or any other extra items or optional.

In the package, you will find different items, drivers and software. The Paperstream Capture is included, but in some cases you might receive for free the single user Paperstream Capture Pro software.

As you know, the CD includes the Paperstream IP driver, the Abby Finereader for Scansnap or express version, and of course the Operation Panel for the status and alert monitoring of different errors that might occur on your device.

If you buy the barcode optional, you might also get 2 sheets, the 1D and the 2D barcode example sheets.

There is also a limited warranty certificate in the box, but you will never need it for warranty, as in most cases the invoice will be enough.

Features for Productivity

If you are trying to batch scan documents of mixed sizes, the Auto Page Size detection will analyze each page independently and adjust it accordingly.

The Paperstream IP driver on the fi-7180 comes with Automatic Rotation of Images. I like the feature and use it a lot of times.

One of the first productivity features that we look for in a device, is the Auto Color Detection. Especially on this scanner, the function is much more accurate given the CCD sensor and the double light source for each side of a document.

Afraid of manually removing white pages? Don’t be, as the Blank page removal is available with this scanner and is quite accurate, way better than in more expensive scanners we tested.

The Fujitsu fi-7180 will process documents with different settings in a single job. This is called Dual or Multi Stream and what you basically get is, for example, a color file and a grayscale file in the same scanning process.

Quality of images

The Background Cleaning is a must-have feature with any scanner and of course it’s standard with this model.

Have you tried using the Edge Cleanup for your scanned documents? It’s a great feature, especially for text documents or standard office sheets. For images, it might not always work well though.

Everyone knows the deskew feature. This comes as standard with any scanner and with this Fujitsu you can also use content-based skew reduction. But for most situations the page edge deskew will be enough.

With the hole punch removal feature, punched documents always come out clean without the nasty black marks on the edges.

Everyone knows the streaks you get on your scans the moment your glass has dirt or lint stuck on it. The streak reduction feature corrects this nicely and sometimes it can be a lifesaver.

Extra Features

Just like with any scanning process today, there will be moments when you will scan paper that is crumpled or in a bad condition. You will have to use manual feed, which you can easily activate on the Fujitsu Fi-7180.

I can’t imagine scanning without Barcodes. You can use it to enhance the indexing process, especially with the 2D barcodes in which you can stick so much information.

Where I also use barcodes is for the automatic document separation. Personally I prefer barcodes, as I can both separate and index at the same time. But you can also use the patch code sheets recognized by the software or introduce white pages.

Last but not least you have the OCR engine. On the Fujitsu FI 7180 you can use the OCR feature from Paperstream Capture for Full or for Zonal OCR. The zone OCR is used in situations where you have standardized documents and want to quickly capture different fields.

A Scansnap ix500 has a capture area of A4 – 216 x 360 mm (8.5 x 14.17 in.), meanwhile the Fujitsu fi-7180 has a smaller scanning area of 8.27 in x 11.69 in.

The Fujitsu fi-7180 operates with a CCD sensor, while the Scansnap ix500 has a CIS sensor. As we often see it the CCD equipment offers a better overall quality , and it’s true also in our case.

So which ADF scanner can digitize a longer document? The Scansnap ix500 is the winning device here with a max. length of 863 mm or 34 in. (Duplex), 1,726 mm or 68 in. (Simplex).

The Fujitsu fi-7180 has built-in USB 3.0 for connectivity, while the Scansnap ix500 has built-in Wireless and USB 2.0, 3.0.

When looking at actual scanning speed, the Fujitsu fi-7180 can capture at 80 pages every minute while the other scanner can only do 25 ppm.
