For some, myself included, it looks more like an Fi 7700, with an operational panel and lcd, and with a bit more speed
I would definitely go for an Fi 7700, but I must say the low profile design of the FI 7800 will really grow on you, and you can buy the product ceritified with VRS.

Speed & Document size
This document scanner will process documents that are A3, or to be more precise 304.8 mm x 431.8 mm (12 in. x 17 in.).
As you already know, just like most of the Fujitsu lineup, these devices are fitted with a really nice CCD sensor. This really aids the image processing functions that the Paperstream IP driver comes with.
TWhat really gets to me is the USB connection. Why are they still working with a USB 2.0 when we all know that the 3.0 is faster. I know, centralized scanning does not require such transfer speeds, but I would have really loved a 3.0.
The scan speed is around 110 pages in simplex and 220 images in duplex mode, making this scanner a really good midvolume production device.
Maybe you’ll be surprised to hear that this scanner is optimized for an average Recommended volume of 100,000 pages daily.
What has really increased in this device is the average daily volume. This is now around 100,000 pages, which makes the scanner stand out in its class.
Replacing the consumable is usually necessary only when you’ve reached 600.000 pages.
Paper Handling
The Ultrasonic sensor is one of those life-saving features, eve if the scanner comes with the automatic separation control function. Add the length detection to the multifeed features and you will do reliable scanning all day long.
The ADF will hold around 500 sheets of bond paper, making good for centralized scanning, even when you have large volumes of documents.
When you take a better look at the document thickness range, 5.4 to 56 lb (20 to 209 g/m2) might not seem impressive. You have to understand that these devices are oriented to high productivity for normal paper, not necessarily for paper versatility.
There is also a long document scanning mode on this device, allowing you to process documents that are almost 5.5m long or 220 inches.

In the box, you will find the scanner along with other accessories such as cables, plugs and also bundled software.
The Paperstream Capture and the Paperstream IP driver are included with the items delivered. A post imprinter is only available as an option.
One thing to know that there are drivers for a 64bit windows server, which is of great use in high volume environments.
Productivity features
Features like automatic cropping are standard on this scanner. I would not expect it to be different.
The auto-rotation of images is done through the driver and works like a charm for most documents.
The Automatic Color Detection is of great help in lots of cases, and given that you will be scanning various documents that are mixed, I really suggest you have it on. The Fujitsu FI-7800 has this feature and we recommend you use it.
What about blank pages? This scanner will detect and remove them automatically, as long as you leave it turned on in the driver.
Last but not least, you have the multi stream function, which especially on big scanners, will do wonders. Having a bitonal and a color copy done simultaneously is really a good feature.
Features for Image Quality
While the Background Smoothing works great with most documents, you should double-check documents with images and pictures.
When it comes to the quality of your scans, the FI 7800 has a couple of tricks up its sleeve.
The background smoothing setting will clean and homogenize the background of your scans. Documents will have a uniform background color and no data will be lost in the process.
The margins of your scans can be cleaned automatically, with the image edge fill tool. This detects any irregularity on the margins of your scans an applies a correction to each one.
With the deskew feature, any misaligned images are straightened and the edge of the paper is used for the setting to work correctly.
If your paper was punched in the binding process, the driver will remove the punch holes automatically replacing them with the background color.
Last but not least, the streak correction setting will detect most streaks due to dirty scanning optics and will try to filter them out.
Extra Features
Fujitsu has also though of fragile documents. This can be fed manually using the manual feeding feature the scanner provides.
The barcode detection feature works for 1D and 2D barcode, but lately, this has been used more with QR codes.
What I love about the Barcode Detection modules, are the QR code recognition features. It makes for flawless scanning.
Separating documents automatically in the scanning process has been around for some time, and this is easy with the FI 7800. You can use barcode, white pages or even predefined separation where it’s the case.
The OCR features can work in 2 ways. You have your standard full OCR which will use the engine to create readable text from your scanned images. The other works by taking predefined fields, sending them through OCR and creating indexes from those fields.
