What’s so special about it?

The Epson ES-55R is a lightweight portable scanner with accounting management software. It is very light – weighs just 0.59 lb. It is also very small in size. These features make it very portable. It is very easy to use and fast. It can scan 20 images per minute. It can also scan very long documents of up to 72 inches. Using optical character recognition, it is able to create editable and searchable documents. It comes bundled with Epson’s ScanSmart Accounting Edition Software which enables the scanner to offer several accounting tools. It enables one to easily export financial receipt data to software such as QuickBooks, Quicken, and TurboTax.

The Epson ES-55R scanner can scan 20 images per minute. This is pretty fast. It has a high resolution of 600 dpi. 600 dpi is a lot, it’s more than you will ever need. You can do normal office work with 200 or 300dpi without any problems. At 600 dpi the resolution is excellent.

It can scan a variety of documents up to A4 size. It has a maximum document size of 8.5 in. x 72 in. (215 x 1828 mm). This means that it can scan documents that are as long as 72 inches. It can also scan documents of varying thickness as long as they are within 12 lb. to 72 lb. (46 – 270 gsm).

It supports USB 2.0 connectivity. It can be powered by USB and can scan documents directly to a computer when connected via USB.

It comes bundled with a TWAIN interface which makes it easy to integrate into custom applications. It also comes with a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) sensor. This sensor requires the documents to perfectly touch the scanning glass for a perfect scan. This may compromise the image quality when scanning old or crumpled documents.

Features for Productivity

The Epson ES-55R is a simplex scanner. This means that It does not support duplex scanning and it can only scan a single side of a double-sided document at a time. When scanning double-sided documents, you may need to turn the documents manually.

It does not offer Automatic Color Detection. This means that you will need to change color settings manually before scanning. Automatic color detection is a great feature, especially when scanning colored documents.

It does not offer Automatic Image Rotation. This means that the scans are stored just as they are scanned. For instance, if you scan a document in landscape mode, the image will also be in landscape mode.

Automatic Image Cropping is a feature that enables the scanner to detect how big the image is and crop it automatically. This ensures you don’t have black parts on the edges. This scanner does not offer this feature. However, besides the black parts on the edges, it can not compromise image quality.

While a document may have a clean background to the naked eye, when you scan it, the background might not look clean. Most scanners offer Background Removal to help clean the background. This scanner does not offer this feature and it may compromise the clarity and quality of the images.

Quality of images

The Epson ES-55R scanner supports Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This enables it to create editable and searchable PDF files. It also enables it to extract and organize expense data from receipts.

It does not support Automatic Deskew. Automatic Deskew is a feature that aligns documents that were not scanned straight. This may compromise the quality of images that are not scanned straight.

It does not offer Punch Hole Removal. This means that when scanning documents that have punch holes, the holes will appear in the scans. This may not affect the quality of the images in any way. Mostly the punch holes do not interfere with the documents’ contents. The punch holes will just appear as small, black circles.

The Epson ES-55R scanner does not come with an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray. This should not be something to worry about since it can compromise the scanner’s portability and weight. However, it makes the scanner less efficient when scanning a lot of documents.

In terms of size, it is 10.7in. x 1.8in. x 1.3in. (27.1 x 4.5 x 3.3 cm). This makes it very portable. It is also very light. It weighs 0.59 lb. (0.26 kg) only! You can carry it wherever you go and use it whenever you need to scan anything.
