Kodak Alaris S2050 Review | This small scanner just got faster!

The Kodak Alaris S2050 is the mid range model of the S2000 series of scanners

While most of the technical specs remain identical to its smaller and bigger brother, for example the document size, the speed and volume of pages per day has definitely increased

It’s definitely a product that makes sense, as it will allow you to quickly capture information and not pay a fortune for it.

Kodak Alaris S2050 Datasheet Explained

This equipment should be capable of scanning either an A4 or a letter document quite easily. In fact, the exact scanning size is around 8.27 in x 11.69 in.

The S2000 scanners are all capable of achieving scanning resolutions up to 1200dpi, even if they are fitted with cheaper CIS scanning sensors.

As with newer Alaris scanners, this device is also fitted with a USB 3.1 connection. This should allow you to operate the scanners software much faster than a slower connection.

The S2050 document scanner gets up to 50 pages every minute when using the simplex mode. In duplex, it should get up to 100 images easily.

If you check the official specs, the Estimated volume for each day, is around 5,000 documents.

We love that Kodak rates it for 5,000 documents every single day. With the scanning speed, the advanced input trays, and output stacking, you can also get to that level in real life.

As you would expect, the driver interface works through ISIS and Twain, but Alaris loves to offer customers also the WIA interface.

Every 200,000 pages you should expect to replace the feed roller kit. This value is somewhat normal in this price range.

Specs for paper handling

As expected, the S2000 scanners come with an Overlap Detection Ultrasonic Sensor and the Length detection feature. These prevent double feeds and stop the scanning process before your documents get in the output tray.

When it comes to input trays, these are big enough on these scanners to hold 80 sheets of standard bond paper.

The 7lb to 160lb document weight is quite impressive, but given the straight paper path, it is expected to be able to do it. This means that there is enough gap to also feed more fragile documents from time to time.

The S2050 has a long document mode and it can go up to 160 inches in paper length. Yes, it’s not a full-on wide format scanner, but for some documents it clearly makes sense.

Kodak Alaris S2050 accessories unboxing

The scanner will take up 12 x 7 x 7 inches on your working desk. Compared to the i5000 series scanners this is very small.

I guess even compared to other scanners this is a very small form factor. Even in terms of weight, this should not be over 7lbs, so it’s not a heavy machine.

Regarding the bundled scanning software, the Kodak Alaris S2050 comes with the Alaris Smart Touch and Alaris Capture Pro Software Limited Edition (through web download).

There is also the possibility to add an A4 or A3 size flatbed accessory to your device. This should be helpful when you’re scanning mixed documents, which include for example fragile documents that won’t go through the scanner.

Features for Productivity

To achieve better productivity I always use the Auto Crop setting. This works really well when documents tare of mixed size.

Add the auto rotation and together these two options will save a lot of preparation time for your documents.

The auto color detection is one of those features that are available on just about any scanner, but it really does wonders on mixes of color and bitonal documents.

Other times, I just enable and use the multi-streaming function to let me have both a color and a bitonal copy of my documents.

Last but not least is the blank document detection. This setting detects empty documents and if enabled it can also remove them automatically.

Quality of images

When it comes to the quality of images, there are a couple of options you’ll find interesting.

First of all, it’s the background removal function which you will really enjoy. It smoothes each document automatically and the background comes out clean.

Then we have the image edge fill. Based on the background color, the driver calculates an average value and it uses that to correct the margins of your documents.

The deskew feature is not new, but it provides a lot of value. Aligning each document based on its margins seems simple, but without it everything you scan would have to be straightened manually.

The hole punch removal function cleans the perforated edges of your documents, removing the black hole patterns which you would get with the setting turned off.

It’s strange to think this Kodak Alaris scanner is not equipped with a streak reduction feature, but given that it has a CCD sensor, this might be the reason.

Extra Features

Can you use the Kodak Alaris S2050 to scan really old documents? You can do that using the manual feed function or if you us the flatbed accessory.

Although Barcode reading for separation isn’t the only separation method, I recommend you get it.

If you don’t buy it, you can do Auto Document Separation with page codes or white pages.

It’s safe to say that OCR is something no scanner should miss. Scanning is not possible without it today.

As you would expect, this scanner comes with an OCR function and this is really helpful these days, considering that everyone expects a scanned document to offer character recognition.

Last but not least, we have the Zonal OCR, which is not so much about full recognition, rather it’s focused on capturing certain fields from your documents, usually the key fields.
