Kodak Alaris S2040 Datasheet Explained

The Kodak Alaris S2040 can scan sheets of up to 8.27 by 11.69 inches in size. It can handle even larger documents, but the input and output tray have been designed with this size in mind.

Kodak Alaris offers a range of scanners that can go up to 1200dpi optical resolution, and this scanner is one of them. Considering they’ve also integrated a CIS chip, this is quite impressive I must say.

Given that the scanner can only be connected with USB 3.1, the device will be a dedicated scanning equipment and you can use it with the Alaris smart touch software.

The other scanner accesories, such as the A4 flatbed accessory connect through the USB cable as well.

Out of this series, this is the slowest model, and unlike the Alaris S2070, it will scan 40PPM in simplex and 80 images in duplex mode, every single minute.

You should be good scanning around 5,000 documents per day, as this is the average duty cycle.

If you check the driver interface, you will see that the scanner works on Twain and ISIS, WIA.

One thing not to neglect is the driver interface. Both Twain and Isis drivers are available on the Kodak s2040.

Unlike Canon Scanners or a Fujitsu scanner in this range, this model has a longer lifespan for the rollers, around 250.000 pages.

Specs for paper handling

To capture multifeeds, all Kodak scanners are fitted with an advanced Ultrasonic sensor that can use sound waves to detect overlapped pages.

The size of the document feeder adf is around 80 sheets which is a fair amount, but nothing special.

Kodak has always provided scanners with the capacity of processing various paperweights, and this does not disappoint. From 7 to 160lb paper, this proves to be incredibly versatile.

At 160 inches in length, the long document mode is great on this device. It does not offer controlled output stacking for documents this long but works great nonetheless.

Kodak Alaris S2040 accessories unboxing

This is a really small scanner. At 12 x 7 x 7 inches and 7.2 lbs. it is easy to move around the office, and even outside it.

Delivered with your scanner you will have the following software items: Alaris Capture Pro LE Edition and Alaris Smart Touch information capture software.

Order it with a flatbed option and carrier sleeves, and you will also find those inside the box.

Features for Productivity

When you scan mixed sized documents just enable automatic page size detection. The same goes for documents that are not oriented identically. Enable automatic rotation of images and you should be fine with those.

The auto color detection can automatically identify which documents are black and white and which are color. It will sort this automatically and scan each one accordingly.

As you would expect, you can run this scanner with the White page detection. Enable this from the driver and let the software determine which pages are blank and which have content. Those without content can be identified and/or deleted automatically.

The Multi Stream function is very good when you want to have different job setups in a single scan. Set it based on your preferences and start scanning documents with various settings in the same job.

Quality of images

Gone are the days when post-processing of documents is required. With the Background Smoothing option, your documents will have a perfect background.

Do you remember when you had to manually photoshop each document to have a clean background? Those days are gone now, with the Background Smoothing function. Your scans come out clean and with a very homogenous background.

The same goes for the margins of the paper. Page Edge cleanup works very well fost most of your scanned documents.

As you probably expect the deskew setting is not missing on the Alaris S2040 and it will automatically align your documents correctly.

For standard documents, I always have the Correct Punched Holes setting turned on in the driver.

I am always curious about how many users actually use this feature, but for me, it’s a lifesaver. You have those fussy customers who are never satisfied with their scans, and this setting usually takes one of their complaints away.

The one setting Kodak scanners always featured was the streaks correction feature. It’s missing on this scanner, and I think it has to do with the CIS sensor it is using.

Extra Features

Can you use the Kodak Alaris S2040 to scan really old documents? It should work if you enable the Feeding Paper by Hand settings.

What you should do when you want to scan old documents is to enable the Manual Feeding mode in which you can feed the paper by hand.

I love the automatic document separation modes on most scanners. Either if you are using a white document, a patch code or even barcode discovery, these are all settings to use for separating documents automatically.

You can use them also for indexing documents, the barcodes I mean. Either that or the Zonal OCR indexing are available.
