Epson ES-60W

Epson ES-60W

The Epson Workforce ES-60W is our favorite portable scanner with wifi connectivity. It’s not the fastest A4 scanner here, the scan speed is just 15 images per minute. It has Wireless 802.11 b/g/n connectivity which you can use to connect securely to your internet hotspot and a USB 2.0 port so you can connect it to your Windows PC or Mac both ways. The TWAIN drivers included make it ready for integration with custom scanning apps. The paper that you can put inside the scanner must be at most as wide as an A4 color but it can be longer up to 72 inches.

This wireless scanner uses a CIS sensor to produce high quality images of up to 600dpi. That image resolution is enough for a portable scanner as usually you are not scanning artwork, it’s mostly documents on the go. this resolution also lets you use it as a photo scanner. The paper can be as thick as 270gsm, so even the thickest business cards or plastic cards can run through the automatic feeder. The Epson ES-60w wireless portable document scanner doesn’t have an ADF tray unfortunately, just the automatic feeding mode so you have to feed the sheets manually one by one.

Epson portable scanners usually come with a lot of great features to automatically correct the scanned documents, so that you don’t have to spend your time in Photoshop or Lightroom to adjust them. It will automatically crop the scanned images, it will rotate them and correct their skew if they have any. It doesn’t have the more advanced features like background removal though, but some scanners in this article do have that. The Epson ES-60W also has an iOS and Android mobile app for wireless tethering.

The scanning software bundle consists of: Epson Scan 2, Epson ScanSmart software with Nuance OCR engine. This portable wireless scanner runs on a rechargeable battery but it can also be usb powered. In either case, you don’t need to connect an extra AC Adapter.

Other choices from Epson include the epson workforce DS-40 wireless portable and epson workforce ES-50. If you want to digitize photos, then a great choice would be the Epson fastfoto ff-680w wireless high-speed photo scanner.

Brother ADS-1700W

Brother ADS-1700W

Brother ADS-1700W
50 IPMA4Wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Micro USB 3.08.5 in. x 34 in. (215 x 863 mm)Yes3.7 lb. (1.67 kg)Click for more info
The Brother ADS-1700W has fast scanning speeds, it can scan 25 pages per minute and since it’s a duplex scanner that means it can digitize 50 images per minute if the documents are double-sided. This is the kind of performance in high-speed desktop document scanners. Ok, maybe not high-speed but definitely comparable to desktop. It is a portable wireless color scanner with a Wireless 802.11 b/g/n connection with encryption support that will help it connect to your local area network instantly. It’s really easy to set up this Brother wireless scanner and to connect it to your router. In addition, this portable scanner also has a Micro USB 3.0 port. The driver selection is quite good on this device, you can put TWAIN, WIA, ICA and SANE. It’s equipped with a Dual CIS Sensor that will scan both sides of a sheet in a single pass, making this a color duplex document scanner.

As far as what type of material you can put in this Brother Mobile Scanner, the manufacturer says that you can use the following: Plain Paper, Thin Paper, Thick Paper, Thicker Paper, Recycled Paper, Business Card, Plastic Card. So you can use it as a business card scanner or ID cards scanner, the feeder will take in documents, receipts, photos and other media types. It has an automatic document feeder ADF tray and that is such a helpful feature when you have to scan several pages. It’s not a compact and lightweight scanner by any means, it’s quite heavy for a portable color scanner at 3.7 lbs so not as portable as the pen scanner but that is because of all the features it packs in like the ADF tray and dual sensors. Still, it can work like a travel scanner and do mobile scanning just fine. This is a scanner that comes with a 2.8″ color LCD display, probably the biggest one on any mobile color page scanner.

The included software bundle that you get in the box with the image scanner consists of: Nuance PaperPort SE with OCR for Windows, Brother iPrint&Scan, Power PDF. The Nuance OCR will do the job but certainly not as good as the ABBYY OCR software. You can use the Brother Web Connect module that works on Mac and PC to automatically upload the documents and images that you scanned to your favorite Cloud Storage platform, be it Google Drive, Evernote or Dropbox. This is a document scanner for PC and Mac with 4 types of interfaces: TWAIN, SANE, WIA and ICA.

Brother ADS-1500W

Brother ADS-1500W
36 IPMA4Wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Hi-Speed USB 2.08.5 in. x 34 in. (215 x 863 mm)Yes3.5 lb. (1.58 kg)Click for more info
The 1500W is a wireless portable scanner just like the 1700W, but with lower specs and a lower price. The scanning speed is 36 images per minute, not as fast as the speed on the 1700W. It has the same wireless connectivity, but the USB port isn’t the same. It built-in wifi in the form of Wireless 802.11 b/g/n and it uses a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. This too has a Dual CIS sensor that can scan both sides of a color document in one single pass, making this a duplex scanner.

On the software side with this Brother mobile color scanner, it’s more of the same: Nuance PaperPort SE with OCR for Windows, Brother ControlCenter2 with OCR for Mac, Presto! PageManager with OCR for Mac. The same OCR software is used, not my favorite but it will do the job properly. Automatic image rotation and auto image cropping are just a few of the image enhancement algorithms that the scanner software is equipped with. It also has a deskew function, so even if you didn’t feed the sheet properly into the scanner, the software will ensure that the image is corrected. This is also quite heavy for a portable scanner with a weight of 3.5 lbs.

Other reliable A4-size scanners with wifi connection from Brother include the Brother ADS-1250W and the Brother DSMobile line with the Brother DS-640.

Fujitsu Scansnap IX100

Fujitsu Scansnap IX100

Fujitsu Scansnap IX100
11 IPMA4USB 2.0, USB 1.1, IEEE 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz)8.5 in. x 34 in. (215 x 863 mm)No0.88 lb. (0.4 kg)Click for more info
The Fujitsu ScanSnap IX100 is similar to the Fujitsu S1300i which we covered in past reviews but it does have wireless connectivity. It supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz), so it won’t connect to 5ghz wireless access points, but then neither do most scanners. It uses the ScanSnap interface, so it doesn’t support TWAIN but chances are you might never need that extra feature. The ScanSnap ecosystem offers so many functions that most office users do not need the extra flexibility offered by TWAIN and ISIS drivers. It is a 600 DPI color scanner, same DPI resolution as the S1300i thanks to its CIS sensor but note that it doesn’t have dual sensors, so you have to run duplex documents twice through it.

You can scan longer documents on this A4 images scanner up to 34 inches in length. It’s not a duplex scanner and that will hurt your productivity. The scanning speed is approximately 11 pages per minute. It also lacks some important image enhancement features like Automatic image rotation or image cropping. This is a compact lightweight handheld scanner because it weighs just 400 grams and no more.

The software in the package with this wifi portable scanner includes: ScanSnap Home, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap. This scanner has the right OCR application with which you can convert scanned images into searchable PDFs and editable word and excel files. You just keep feeding the papers in and the device scans into one file everything and then converts it to your desired OCR format.

Doxie GO SE Wifi

Doxie GO SE Wifi
7 IPMA4Wi-Fi, USB8.5 in. x 30 in. (215 x 762 mm)No1.1 lb. (0.5 kg)Click for more info
The Doxie Go Se Wifi is an alternative to the big A4 size scanner manufacturers such as Fujitsu, Epson or Brother. It is quite slow at just 7 pages per minute, but it does have wireless connectivity.

The coolest thing about this sheetfed scanner is that it can save the digital files directly on a memory card. It has an SD Card slot and they include one in the box with the scanner just like VuPoint does with the Vupoint Magic Portable Handheld Wand Document scanner and the same with the Iriscan Book and Iriscan Pro wifi mobile scanner. Of course, the easiest way to use it is through the wireless scanning feature, but you can also connect it to the PC via USB Cable like you would do with regular office products. And because you don’t need drivers to hook it up to your computer, it is a scanner for Mac and PC.

This portable wireless scanner uses a CCD sensor to produce scanned images at an optical resolution of 600 dots per inch. For photo scanning we recommend 600 dpi but if you scan documents or you use the device as a receipt scanner, 300 dpi should be more than enough, even to produce accurate searchable PDFs. This is an intuitive portable scanner and that is immediately visible in the software interface which is sleek and more modern than what you get even with legacy manufacturers. The OCR technology that the scanner features can create searchable PDF files but cannot output editable word and excel files. It has Wifi so it can connect to your Wireless LAN Router and it also has USB connectivity. The interface that the scanner is uses is TWAIN and it does not have duplex scanning nor an ADF tray, so one sheet a time.

It is a very lightweight scanner, weighing just 1.1 lbs. It also comes with OCR software included.

What portable wireless scanner should I buy?

If you want the best specs, go for the ADS-1700W, but if you want a good all-round scanner and better value for money, our favorite is the Epson ES-60W. Some great mobile document scanners are missing from the list: Canon Imageformula p-215ii, the fujitsu scansnap s1300i portable color duplex document scanner, VuPoint solutions magic wand portable scanner with docking station, Epson workforce es-300ws, epson workforce ds-40, es-50 portable sheetfed document scanner and the Xerox Duplex Travel. If you are interested in flatbed scanners, we reviewed the canon canoscan lide 400 & 300, flippal mobile scanner. Check out our homepage for more product information. If there is not enough room on your desk for a full flatbed, a document camera is more appropriate which can easily scan documents, books and receipts. If you need more productivity, then a compact desktop scanner like the canon imageformula r40 office document scanner which comes with built-in wifi, the HP Scanjet Pro 2500 F1 or the Visioneer Patriot H60 might be the better choice as office document scanners are generally faster and pack more features than their portable counterparts. We reviewed them and similar items on our website.
