The HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 flatbed scanner is our favorite HP Flatbed Scanner. It is an A4 device that has a flatbed and an Automatic Document Feeder. Lately, HP has only been making either ADF Scanners or ADF Scanners with Flatbed. They don’t make pure flatbed scanners anymore and it makes sense because customers want faster and faster, easy-to-use scanners and the price for Automatic Document Feeder ADF technology has gone down and the reliability and performance has gone up. These hybrid models that HP has built seem to be the right flavor.

The pixel density on this particular color flatbed scanner is 600 dpi when you scan through the feeder and 1200 dpi image resolution when you use the Flatbed. An optical resolution of 1200 dpi is more than enough to make it a decent color photo scanner, you can obtain a great amount of detail in photos and optical character recognition accuracy will be high. This HP Flatbed scanner connects to your computer through Hi-Speed USB 2.0. The scanner engine uses a CIS (Contact Image Sensor). The scan speed is 20 sheets per minute. It’s not as fast as some other dedicated ADF scanners out there but it compensates with the versatility of having a flatbed unit. HP recommends that you scan no more than 1500 sheets per day for the machine to last in time beyond the duration of the warranty. The feed roller unit replacement is every 100,000 sheets.

The software that comes with this flatbed ocr scanner is the following: HP Scan, HP Scanner Tools Utility, HP Event (Button) Handler, HP Windows Installer, I.R.I.S. Readiris Pro, I.R.I.S. Cardiris, Nuance PaperPort, LPDF. ReadIris is a solid OCR app, we use the ABBYY software in our digitization center. ReadIris is not our favorite app but then it’s bundled on every HP scanner out there. Of course, you can always just purchase a separate ABBYY app and use it with the scanner.

This device can scan to multiple file formats like PDF, JPEG, PNG, Bitmap, TIFF, TXT(Text), RTF (Rich Text) and searchable PDF. The HP scanning software has a several image enhancement features like automatic cropping, color image rotation, blank page detection, etc. These features will make it so that you don’t spend any time in Photoshop afterwards. It’s compatible with both major operating systems, Windows and OS X.

The HP ScanJet 3500 f1 is an even faster version of the 2500. It can turn physical documents into digital images at a rate of 25 sheets per minute, so in two-sided scanning mode you will get 50 images per minute and it also has a faster USB Port and USB cable. The integrated SuperSpeed USB 3.0 has a data transfer rate of 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s). The scan size is up to A4 just like with the other HP sheetfed scanners here.

This HP Flatbed Scanner has the same type of flatbed that you get on the 2500, so you get the 1200 dpi scanning resolution without any interpolation that will allow you to inspect every little detail in the scanned images. Again, the flatbed unit has proven to be very useful for us in our scanning projects. We always encounter fragile documents or with staples that make it necessary for us to use the flatbed to digitize the document. Because the scanner assembly has a flatbed, all media types and input types are accepted, wether they are thick like ID Cards or thin like receipts.

The document scanner comes with TWAIN, ISIS and WIA drivers that make it compatible with other scanning applications. The feed rollers are just as durable as the ones on the 2500 F1 flatbed OCR scanner, lasting for 100,000 scanned documents until you have to replace them. It has the same type of sensor so you will get the same resolution and the same color depth as you get on the ScanJet Pro 2500. The auto document feeder tray can stack up to 50 sheets.

HP provides the HP EveryPage, HP Scan, I.R.I.S. Readiris Pro OCR software when you buy this digital flatbed scanner. The ReadIris app will ensure that you can convert your documents to searchable PDFs and Word documents. There is a Scan to Cloud option that helps you integrate the scanner with Google Drive, Dropbox or Evernote.

This HP Flatbed Scanner is essentially the same as the other two but with a few key differences. The scan speed is different, while the other two manage a 20 and 25 sheets per minute scan speed, this one can do 30 sheets per minute. It’s not a significant difference, but every small increase counts. The daily recommended volume is bigger, so you can digitize up to 4,000 documents per day without any problems.

This document flatbed scanner has USB connectivity with USB 3.0 speeds and ethernet. You can scan any document size up to A4 with it at a resolution of up to 600 dpi color and monochrome and all this at a color bit depth of 24-bit. The software CD comes with the following software: Kofax VRS Pro, HP Scan, HP EveryPage, I.R.I.S. Readiris Pro OCR to create searchable PDF files and Word documents in which you can edit text, Nuance PaperPort. If you are an old HP User, you may be familiar with the HP Smart Document Scan app which has been replaced with th e more advanced and modern HP Scan app. This particular image scanner has a 1-year limited warranty. It is energy star certified so the power that runs through the power adapter and power cord is minimal.

Another key difference with this digital scanner is the addition of ethernet network connectivity. That will allow you to share the HP 4500 fn1 network scanner amongst your home or office network. We consider this to be a significant plus for the 4500 as network connectivity is a must-have for office scanners. The option to connect to a wifi network would have been even better. If it were a production scanner we would understand, as those are not really meant to be used by multiple users but with office scanners it really counts. If you want to add 2 users to this color scanner you can do so without any modifications, but with USB-only scanners you usually end up purchasing an extra one or two.

But what if this speed is not enough for you? Besides laser printers and inkjet printers, HP also produces production scannerse. You want to look at faster models like the Scanjet Pro 3000 S4 sheetfeed scanner with 40 ppm speed, the Enterprise Flow 7000 s3 sheetfeed scanner which has a speed of up to 75 ppm, the HP Scanjet enterprise flow n9120 fn2 document scanner that is ridiculously fast at 120 ppm and the hp digital sender flow 8500 fn2 with a speed of 100 PPM (pages per minute). Along with the speed, these models also have more advanced features like recognition of bar codes.

Which HP Flatbed Scanner should I choose?

We like the Hewlett Packard 2500 because of its great value for money, but if you need the extra speed and extra connectivity, we suggest that you go for the Hp Scanjet Pro 4500 fn1 as your HP Flatbed Scanner. You can buy all of these devices online and we recommend Amazon, Office Depot, B&H and Best Buy. Some HP Scanners were not featured here: hp scanjet enterprise flow n9120, hp scanjet g4050, scanjet enterprise flow n9120 fn2, scanjet n6350, hp scanjet g3110 flatbed scanner, hp scanjet n6310 document flatbed scanner, s2 sheetfeed scanner, the Digital Sender Flow 8500 fn2. There is another option, in case none of these flatbed ADF scanners fit the scanner type you are looking for: You can buy an HP Scanjet document scanner that doesn’t have a flatbed and you just buy a separate digital flatbed photo scanner like an Epson Perfection V39 or a Canon Canoscan Lide 400. You can set them up to save in the same folder and have more or less the same scan profile settings and that solution is going to work. Not as good as when the flatbed is built into the scanner, but it will work.
