What’s so special about it?

The Epson ES-200, a portable document scanner launched in 2017 can digitize papers at a staggering speed of 50 images per minute. It’s portable and it can also scan duplex, so you only have to pass the sheets through it once. Plus it comes with an ADF tray in which you can stack 20 sheets. It has some cool features bundled into it, like scanning directly to the cloud. That makes a lot of sense these days because most of us keep our files in either a Google Drive, iCloud or a OneDrive. The Epson ScanSmart software also offers the option to do OCR on scanned documents. So you will be able to convert your papers directly to searchable PDFs and editable word and excel files and edit them instantly after. Not only that, but this Epson scanner comes with intelligent Image Processing software so that you can adjust the color and the contrast, lighting, etc. on the fly.

Epson ES-200 Datasheet Explained

The Epson ES-200 has fast scanning speeds. 50 images per minute fast. Now obviously, it’s not something new or the fastest scan speeds in its price range because other scanners will offer you similar performance. The paper formats that it can scan, range from business cards up to A4 format. It has a CIS sensor that can scan documents at a high optical resolution of 600dpi. I know manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of DPI at the moment, coming with 3600dpi flatbeds, but you have to know that in the real world, 600dpi is more than enough. There’s really no point in getting much more detailed than that. In reality, you like the 200dpi because the quality is good enough and it’s fast and the file size is super small.

This Epson ES-200 surprisingly does not come with Wi-fi built-in. You would have expected this given the really powerful set of features. Now for this type of money, other scanners will offer Wi-Fi, so this Epson scanner has a big minus here. Like all Epson scanners, it comes with TWAIN drivers so that it can be paired up with custom and more advanced scanning applications. You can connect it to your computer via USB cable 3.0 and it can be ac or usb powered and Epson will supply a separate AC Adapter in the package.

The maximum width of the sheet you can scan is 8.5 inches and the maximum length of the paper that you can scan is 44 inches. As far as media handling and paper thickness is concerned, between 51 and 230gsm. That means that anything from a thin receipt, to invoices and up to business cards, plastic cards is ok. .

Features for Productivity

As I previously wrote, the Epson workforce es-200 color portable comes with duplex scanning. Epson calls this single-step technology, This is a big thing, you only have to run the paper through the scanner once and you can scan 2-sided documents. If you’re still considering whether it’s worth the extra money, I can tell you now that yes, it is.

Apart from this, all the Epson image processing technology features are included. There is an automatic cropping feature which will output the image without any black borders, an automatic image rotation feature which will rotate the image by itself if you accidentally put it upside down in the scanner. You also receive automatic color detection with this scanner, a feature with which the scanner is capable of detecting if you put a black & white invoice in it, or a photo.

All these intelligent color and image enhancement features are great and we here at our scanning center, could not work without them. .

Quality of images

This little scanner also comes with automatic deskew. It will align the sheet that you scanned properly, even up to 1 degree in precision. So it doesn’t matter if the paper didn’t go through the scanner perfectly straight, because the scanner’s software will correct this problem.

This Epson Workforce es-200 portable duplex document scanner has built-in OCR, to help you instantly convert your documents into Word documents, searchable PDFs, etc. The technology, however, is from Nuance. It’s good OCR but it’s not the best technology that you can get. I always prefer the OCR engines from Adobe and ABBYY, but this is a personal preference and things can change with updates. Still, in most cases, it will work just great..

Epson ES-200 accesories unboxing

I wrote about this before, but it is so good, I will say it again, the workforce es-200 color portable document comes with an integrated ADF tray. And it’s not a small one either, it is a 20-page auto document feeder. That’s perfect for a portable scanner because you can do quick batch scanning for stacks of paper that you have in your office.

You would think after putting all of these features in this mobile desktop scanner, it would be heavy but it is not. It weighs only 2.4 lbs. This puts this scanner 0.6 lbs lighter than the average scanner for this price. There are lighter scanners on the market, but not with so many features packed in, which makes for convenient portability.

You also get many scanning software options with this portable document scanner with ADF. Epson Scan 2, Epson ScanSmart Software, Nuance OmniPage Optical Character Recognition (OCR), NewSoft Presto! BizCard are the apps that come bundled in with the scanner. The abbyy finereader software is missing and is replaced by the Nuance version. The Epson Scan software easily scans and syncs your documents to cloud storage accounts that you set it like Google Drive, Evernote and Sharepoint. It is also responsible for the automatic color and image adjustments mentioned in this article. The software for this sheetfed duplex scanner work with PC and Mac.

Along with the es-200 color portable document scanner, Epson also makes two other scanners in this line: epson workforce es-300w and the epson workforce es-400 which has fast scanning speeds for a scanner in its class. It is a desktop scanner, sheetfed and duplex scanning ready. .

What do real users say?

People who bought and used the scanner for a while have complained about either a black bar appearing (which was covered by Epson through warranty) and the fact that the automatic deskew algorithm isn’t quite perfect. They loved the speed at 300dpi which is unmatched, the fact that the scanner works very silently and the flexibility that you get with the image adjustments. Brightness, contrast, gamma are just a few of the things that you can adjust. Users also love the fact that the scanner uses a 3.0 USB port so data transfer is very fast. As I mentioned, 300dpi seems to be the resolution that everyone uses with this scanner. <!–
