The first scanner that hits our 100 PPM speed benchmark and our favorite is the Canon DR-G1100. It is crazy fast. It can really scan 100 pages per minute. It has a hi-speed USB 2.0 connection (Which in my humble and most honest opinion should have been a 3.0) and an automatic feeder tray in which you can stack 500 sheets. That’s one of the biggest ADF trays ever put into a production scanner. The other scanners in this article stack around 300 sheets or so. It can handle a daily scanning volume of 25,000 pages per day. These are crazy numbers.

It has TWAIN and ISIS drivers which are mandatory for a scanner in this class. The feed rollers are highly reliable, they can last up to 300,000 sheets. In long document mode you will be able to scan documents as long as 118 inches. The DR-G1100 100 PPM scanner comes with the Canon CaptureOnTouch and Kofax VRS software. We love the VRS because you can do live image adjustments while scanning, see the output and calibrate to your needs. It offers everything from color mode detection, automatic rotation, blank page detection. Every single feature that a high-speed scanner should have, exists in this Canon scanner. It even has hole punch removal, edge correction and automatic deskew of the scanned images.

The scanning software is compatible with 32-bit 64-bit windows Server, Windows 10.

It comes with Optical Character Recognition for creating searchable PDFs, of course not as fast as they are scanned.

The GR-2090 is another 100 ppm A3 scanner, made by the same manufacturer, but it differs a bit. For starters, they have put in a USB 3.1 port (Thank you!) which can really keep up with those scanned images at higher resolutions. It’s more of the same as with the other Canon, it is capable of scanning a maximum daily volume of 30,000 sheets, an optical resolution of 600 dpi from its built-in CIS sensor and TWAIN and ISIS drivers. The automatic document feeder ADF capacity is 300 sheets, an appropriate size for scanners of this speed that will work well in batch scanning. The scanning size is up to 11.69 x 16.54 inches but you can scan extra long documents up to 118 inches long.

It has the same feed roller lifespan of 300,000 scanned documents until they need to be replaced and it has the same software, the CaptureOnTouch Pro (This is what image capture plus is to Panasonic scanners and what Document Capture Pro is to Epson scanners, so an all-in-one scanning app which includes automatic image processing features for increasing productivity ) and also the Kofax VRS which we love. This 100 PPM scanner will correct your scanned images by automatically rotating them so they are not upside-down, deskewing them if they were fed incorrectly into the sheet fed scanner, detecting and removing blank pages whenever you have duplex documents and of course background cleaning. It’s missing the streaks correction feature, which other scanners in this class have.

It will recognize barcodes and can translate them into metadata too and it also comes with Optical Character Recognition to read and convert the scanned images into editable Word documents or searchable PDFs.

The Fujitsu Fi-7700 is our third 100 PPM scanner. It too is A3 and it has a high resolution CCD image sensor that can output images at up to 1200 dots per inch resolution. This scanner can produce superior image quality due to this perfect combination of sensor type and resolution. In duplex scanning mode, you’ll be reaching fast scanning speeds up to 200 images per minute. This has the right USB too, a USB 3.0 port integrated and USB cable included. The speed is basically the same as the other scanners but there may be slight variations when you increase the resolution.

The feed rollers aren’t as reliable as the ones on the Canon scanners but they still last for 250,000 scans. One thing that we really like about it, because we use one in our digitization lab is that it has a straight paper path. It is always good to have one of these because it can scan more fragile documents and thicker paper like plastic cards. You still need a paper chute at the end so that the documents don’t fly everywhere in both cases, so the straight pass makes sense to have.

The Fi-7700 image scanner has an advantage over the Canon scanners as far as media weight is concerned. You can put in thicker paper than you could in the Canon scanners. The software bundle is huge: PaperStream IP driver (TWAIN/ISIS) image enhancement solution with patch code, barcode and 2D matrix code, PaperStream Capture, Scanner Central Admin management software (Available for download: ScanSnap Manager for fi-series, Scan to Microsoft SharePoint, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap) ABBYY FineReader Sprint, Scanner Central Admin Agent. The software is compatible with PC and Mac.

As far as intelligent scan correction is concerned, you have all the automatic features and even Streaks correction, something the Canon scanners are missing. It will separate documents, remove blank pages and do all the automatic image enhancement that you need in such a fast scanner. Of course, there is multifeed detection that includes overlap detection using an ultrasonic sensor and also length detection.

The Fujitsu Fi-6400 is the second to last 100 PPM scanner that we will be covering. It too has a CCD sensor that outputs 1200dpi images, but unfortunately it is let down by the slower USB port. It’s just a USB 2.0 port and not a 3.0 port which you would expect in modern office products, so image transfer will run slower especially at that 1200dpi resolution. USB Flash drives and external hard-drives are not supported, just a direct connection to the PC. Change the scanning modes to a higher resolution and the speed will decrease again. It has an ADF tray in which you can feed 500 pages and scan them all automatically with the push of a button. It’s an A3 scanner like the others, all the production scanners are A3.

Fujitsu claim that the feed rollers on this color duplex document scanner will last for 600,000 scanned images. That’s double than what the other paper feed systems on scanners here offer, so if you are looking for the most reliable and low-maintenance, you have found it. It can detect if more than one document is fed accidentally in the scanner using a triple ultrasonic sensor.

The document scanning software has the following scanning apps included: PaperStream IP (TWAIN) driver, PaperStream IP (ISIS) driver, 2D Barcode for PaperStream, Software Operation Panel, Error Recovery Guide, PaperStream Capture, Scanner Central Admin Agent.

Of course, the Fi-6400 has all the image enhancement features like cropping, rotation, deskew, detecting and eliminating blank pages like the rest of the scanners in this category and of course Optical Character Recognition and a Zonal OCR feature. The product is Energy star certified so power consumption is minimal.

Xerox 6710

The Xerox 6710 can reach the same speed as the other scanners, namely 100 Pages per minute. It has an ADF tray of 300 sheets and a strong daily volume of 35,000 pages per day. The Xerox is one of the lightest scanners here with just 37 lbs in weight, but it does pack all the features that you get in the other scanners. Twain, WIA and ISIS drivers help you integrate the scanner into more complex scanning projects that include 3rd party scanning apps. You can scan any document size up to A3 and extra-long documents and it has a double feed detection like you would expect in a scanner with such a fast feeding mechanism.

It comes with a capture software bundle that includes Visioneer Acuity (That is because Xerox, apart from laser printers doesn’t actually build many of their products, they partner with a manufacturer and then brand them as their own, that’s how they do it with wide format inkjet printers) Visioneer OneTouch, ABBYY FineReader Sprint.

So what is the best 100 PPM scanner?

Our favorite is the Canon G-1100 in terms of overall performance, customer satisfaction after 6 months, user experience and reliability but the Fujitsu Fi-7700 is a solid choice too.
