The Fujitsu Scansnap IX1500 is probably the best Fujitsu scanner you can buy today. Of course, it won’t satisfy every requirement. We don’t recommend you buy this as a high volume scanner. This is suited to office use, where it definitely shines.

Let’s see the paper handling aspects for this device. The scanning speed will easily do around 30 pages per minute when scanning in simplex mode. Of course, when you are running in duplex mode, both sides of the document will be captured automatically. This is a big plus for any scanning device.

The ADF will hold around 50 sheets. While this is encouraging to see, we would have loved it to be a bit bigger. That would have been a plus for this device. Still, we are optimistic that in the near future, Fujitsu might upgrade this feature.

Another interesting feature is the long document scanning mode. This is a good feature to have on just about any document scanner. Practically, a document with the width of an A4 and a length of around 118 can be scanned in one digital image.

This A4 document scanner will has a Daily Duty Cycle of 400 sheets. Even if most scanners that we feature in this article have a Daily Duty Cycle of 4000 documents/day, you can still scan without any issues. Actually, this value does not really limit you when using the scanner.

An aspect that is neither positive or negative, is the image quality. This Fujitsu document scanner uses a CIS sensor, therefore the image quality is good, but not the best.

Let’s focus now on the best aspect of this device. The Wifi connection is probably the best thing about it. You can scan to different destinations, or even to a smartphone. Just try and use the scanner as a digital sender. You will love it.

The software that comes with this Fujitsu is quite good actually. The one I love the most, and the one you will definitely use, is the Abbyy Finereader for Scansnap. There is no document scanning without OCR. You have to have either ABBYY or another bundled OCR software. Luckily, it’s great to see that this device scans with OCR.

Fujitsu fi-7160

Fujitsu fi-7160

The Fujitsu fi-7160 will scan 60 PPM color and black & white, at a resolution of 1200 dpi. It has a scanning area of 8.27 in x 11.69 in, and supports A4 portrait and landscape format, like most scanners in this article. It will also scan up to 120 images per minute, which again is on par with most of the scanners reviewed here.

The Daily Duty Cycle of 4000 is just the volume that the manufacturer considers this duplex document scanner is suited for. On this model of scanner, you will be able to fit 80 sheets in the automatic document feeder tray, and scan in Long Document scanning mode, i.e, up to 220 inches long documents. This a usb document scanner and USB 3.0 connectivity is recommended if you are looking for a fast scanner. This is a scanner for PC and Mac and the drivers together with the scanning software are compatible with both.

What we like about this color image document scanner, is the fact that it comes with so many features: Automatic color detection, Automatic rotation, Blank Page Detection, MultiStream, Automatic Cropping, Edge Correction, Streaks Correction, Background Cleaning, Deskew, Hole Punch Removal, Manual Feed Mode, Document Separation, Barcode Recognition, OCR and Zonal OCR.

It weighs 9.2 lbs, and Feed Roller Replacement of 200 000 documents scanned, which is the average for most scanners featured in this article.

So, besides the quite limited scanning area, we can say that this fujitsu document scanner is a good quality scanner with interesting features. If you want to scan fragile documents as well, then the Fujitsu fi-7260 would be more suitable as it is the same scanner but with a flatbed unit attached to it. They can share the same AC adapter, you don’t need an extra one. These scanners are part of the Fi Series which are focused on productivity with more advanced paper handling features rather than flexibility and ease-of-use with integrated touch screens like the ScanSnap network scanners line.

Fujitsu fi-7180

Fujitsu fi-7180
A48.27 in x 11.69 inUSB 3.08016080 sheets6,000 sheetsClick for more info
As we mentioned earlier, we like the Fujitsu brand, and the Fujitsu fi-7180 is probably our favourite here. When it comes to productivity, it scores some good points: 80 Sheets per minute, Daily Duty Cycle of 6,000 sheets, USB 3.0 connectivity, 160 IPM scanning speed.

It is also worth mentioning that the device comes with all the software present on the Fujitsu fi-7160, i.e, MultiStream, Automatic Cropping, Edge Correction, Streaks Correction (this helps with some of the dust particles so that you don’t have to wipe the scanner clean everytime), Background Cleaning, Deskew, Hole Punch Removal, Automatic color detection, Automatic rotation, Blank Page Detection, Manual Feed Mode, Document Separation, Barcode Recognition, OCR and Zonal OCR.

What is interesting about Zonal OCR is that it does not only analyze the entire page and convert it to text. It will only convert certain predefined zones of your scanned document to text. This is useful when you scan invoices, and you want to convert only the number of the invoice or the date.

However, this Fujitsu desktop scanner weighs almost 20 lbs, and the scanning area is not outstanding either: 8.27 in x 11.69 in. We would still recommend this scanner for it is fast and reliable. The media that you can put into the scanner can be either very thin like plain paper and receipts or very thick like embossed cards up to 1.4mm thickness.

A Fujitsu technician once explained to me there is a small trick that you can do with current models of the Fi Series scanners where you fold a wide format document in 4 or 8, scan each side and then the software stitches it together. That is not a good idea, but for very rare documents, it might just work. Scansnap document scanners do not have this function.

Our last Fujitsu scanner for this article is the Fujitsu Scansnap ix500. It can cover all scanning sizes up to 216 x 360 mm (8.5 x 14.17 in.), and a Long Document scanning mode of 863 mm or 34 in. (Duplex), 1,726 mm or 68 in. (Simplex), which are definitely its strongest points.

This sheetfed scanner is also equipped with a bundle of easy-to-configure-and-use software, and wireless connectivity as well as USB 2.0 and 3.0. It does not come with MultiStream, Hole Punch Removal, Document Separation, Barcode Recognition and Zonal OCR, but it has regular OCR.

However, the ADF on this color duplex scanner can only accommodate 50 sheets, and it has Daily Duty Cycle of 400 sheets. The feed roller replacement is the usual 200 000 documents scanned. The scanning speed is also far inferior to all the other scanners reviewed in this article, at only 25 sheets per minute, and also 25 images per minute.

Fujitsu also makes the fujitsu scansnap ix100 portable scanner which is the portable version, along with the fujitsu scansnap s1300i mobile scanner, the improved version of the fujitsu scansnap s1100i. This ScanSnap line is meant to improve upon the older fujitsu scansnap s1500m model.

We have analyzed both the pros and the cons of these 4 Fujitsu document scanners. To sum it all up, we would probably recommend the Fujitsu Fi-7180. It definitely has the highest scanning speed, at around 80 pages per minute. Also, they have correlated the daily duty cycle with the scanning speed, increasing it to 6000 pages. This is really good to hear.

If you don’t have the budget for this device, then you can downgrade to a slower model. For this, you can try the Fujitsu FI 7160. This scanner is more or less identical to the FI-7180. The only difference is that the 7160 has a scanning speed of around 60 pages. Also, the daily duty cycle is a bit lower, at around 4000 pages.

The scansnap IX1500 is a good alternative if you are looking for a digital sender. With a Wifi connection, you can achieve many more things than with a USB connection. For example, you can scan to wireless destinations or smartphone devices. It’s also much lighter than the Fi models and cheaper. But it’s not built to scan as many documents.

Other fujitsu scanner models to consider for different applications are the scansnap sv600 overhead camera for all kinds of documents from books to business cards. It is supposed to be a modern replacement for flatbed scanners.

But if you are looking for the best Fujitsu scanner in 2020, the FI-7180 is probably the best all rounder.
