Epson ES-50 mobile scanner | An honest review.

What’s so special about it?

The Epson ES-50 Portable Document Scanner is the fastest and lightest compared to other portable scanners of the same price. It can scan a single page in just 5.5 seconds. It may be small but it can be used to scan extra-long pages. It can also be used to scan small documents such as ID cards and receipts. It comes with Epson ScanSmart Software that allows one to easily scan, review and save any documents. The Automatic Feeding Mode enables one to combine multi-page scans into one file. It also has Nuance OCR that supports the creation of editable Word and Excel files as well as searchable PDFs. In terms of power, there are no batteries or external power supplies needed. All you need is your computer’s USB port since it is USB powered. Additionally, it is Windows and Mac compatible. This ensures that you can use it with your computer regardless of your computer’s operating system.

This scanner can scan 10 A4 pages per minute. It does not offer a duplex scan, therefore it scans one side at a time. These are not really fast scanning speeds. At this price point, most mobile document scanners will offer a scan speed faster than 15 pages per minute It supports several paper formats and sizes such as Business cards, A4, A5, A6, A3 with stitching function, A7, A8, B5, B6, Postcards, Letters, and Plastic cards.

It offers an excellent scanning resolution of 600 dpi. This is a very high resolution. You can perform normal scanning with just 200 dpi or 300 dpi. At 600dpi, the OCR’s performance is excellent.

It will connect to your computer using a USB connection. This means that it can be used anywhere there is access to USB connectivity including a laptop or PC and it can power itself using the USB cable. However, it does not support wireless or ethernet connections.

It comes with a TWAIN driver that makes it compatible with virtually any software. This will ensure that it can be easily integrated into any customized application.

The ability to scan a wide range of documents and media types makes this scanner a smart choice. It can scan paper that is as light as 35gsm to thick paper that is 270gsm. So you put a variety of paper or media types from business cards to ID cards and receipts. It can also scan long papers of up to 1.8 meters.

It comes with a Color Contact Image Sensor (CIS) optical sensor. This usually requires the document to touch the scanning glass perfectly to achieve a perfect scan. This contributes greatly to the scanner’s lightweight nature.

Features for Productivity

This scanner being single-sided, it does not support duplex scanning. It can only scan one side at a time. This may slow things a little bit and it is therefore not suitable for heavy-duty scanning. It does do well however on the image quality enhancement part.

It has automatic color detection. This ensures that the scanner can tell when scanning photos in color or text documents in black & white. It also supports automatic image rotation.

It offers automatic image cropping. This means that even if the entire surface is scanned, the driver of the scanner automatically detects the size of the document and crops the scan accordingly.

It does not offer background removal. This may result in scans that do not have a very clean background. This, however, does not interfere with the contents of the scans..

Quality of images

Automatic Deskew is a feature that comes with this wireless compact scanner. This means that the scanner will align any documents that were not scanned straight hence producing clear and well-organized scans.

When scanning documents that have punch holes, this scanner will remove the punch holes and produce clean scans.

It comes with Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This is my favorite feature. It enables the scanner to create editable text documents such as searchable pdfs and editable word files..

This scanner does not have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Tray. Considering its size, this is logical since having the tray could increase the overall size of the scanner.

Like all Epson scanners which are portable, it is very light – 0.59 lb (0.26 kg). This is very light considering most portable scanners that have a similar price are heavier. It is also very small in size – 10.7″ x 1.8″ x 1.3″ (27.1 x 4.5 x 3.3 cm). These are the features that make it very portable. You can literally use it anywhere. Again, like with many of their portable scanners, Epson call this the fastest and lightest mobile single-sheet-fed document scanner in its class. It is light but not the fastest.

In terms of scanning software, the Epson Workforce es-50 portable document comes with Epson Scan 2, Epson ScanSmart Accounting Edition and also includes Nuance OCR engine. It doesn’t include the document capture pro app that Epson puts on all its desktop scanners. You need an internet connection for downloading and installing the software them when setting up the scanner for the first time. This is a document scanner for PC and Mac so all the software is going to be compatible on Windows 10 and Mac OS Catalina. Users of this scanner are very pleased with how portable it is. Most of them call it ”the great little scanner”. The quality of the scanned documents is also great according to the users.
