Let’s have a look at each product in particular.
Doxie GO SE
Product | Images / Minute | Format | Connectivity | Max. document size | ADF Tray | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Doxie GO SE | 7 IPM | A4 | USB | 8.5 in. x 30 in. (215 x 762 mm) | No | 1.3 lb. (0.59 kg) | Click for more info |
The Doxie GO has a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) sensor that manages to capture the images. We prefer the CCD to CIS usually, but in recent times, manufacturers have come up with much better CIS (Contact Image Sensor) sensors. This mobile document scanner has a rechargeable battery and you charge it through the AC Adapter because the USB connection is not a strong enough power supply for it, so it can’t run solely USB powered. You can run all kinds of media types through the scanner including ID cards, photos, receipts and business cards.
This portable scanner doesn’t have an ADF tray and cannot scan duplex documents in a single pass, so you have to run the double-sided document through this document scanner twice. The Doxie Go provides cloud support as well, you can send your documents to cloud storage accounts including Evernote, Dropbox or Google Drive with just a click. This is a scanner for Mac and PC and the Doxie software in the package works on both systems.
Along with the doxie go se portable scanner, Doxie also makes a cordless flatbed photo scanner, the Doxie Flip which can scan 4×6 photos, but the maximum scan size doesn’t go beyond that.
Brother just launched a Brother Mobile Color Scanner, the 940 DS-940DW which offers SD card support and is a great competitor to this product. The device is a wireless mobile scanner, something which no portable scanner with SD card support offers at this point. We will be including it in our article soon.
Vupoint ST 470
Product | Images / Minute | Format | Connectivity | Max. document size | ADF Tray | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Vupoint ST 470 | 6 IPM | A4 | Hi-Speed USB 2.0 | 8.5 in. x 125 in. (215 x 3175 mm) | No | 2.8 lb. (1.27 kg) | Click for more info |
Of course, it has flash memory support, you can put an SD card in it (formatted FAT32 or NTFS) and it will save everything that you have scanned onto it. Like the Doxie Go, you can also connect it to your Windows PC or Mac via a USB Cable. The package contents come with an 8 GB memory card included which consists of basically an 8g Micro SD Card and an adapter to get you started. The sd card and usb connectivity make it one of the most flexible devices on the market.
VuPoint also provides an Optical Character Recognition OCR software with this image scanner called ABBYY FineReader. It’s the best software that you can get at the moment and it convert to the most file formats of any OCR software. It will convert JPEG and TIFF digital images to searchable PDFs and Word Documents with a 99%+ accuracy. This too is a slow scanner with a scan speed of just 6 pages per minute. It’s a document scanner for PC and Mac, you can connect it to both operating systems and download the files from it.
All paper sizes up to A4 can fit in the scanner and you can also scan extra-long documents of up to 125 inches in length. It is not a color duplex scanner, so you need to manually feed the paper twice if you want to obtain both sides.
It has some solid image enhancement features like auto crop and color mode detection but lacks automatic deskew and Punch hole removal. It doesn’t have a dust removal feature, so always make sure you use a clean cloth to clean the scanning glass. Obviously it doesn’t have the Digital ICE Features that an Epson perfection v800 or an epson perfection v600 has, but chances are you might not even notice they are missing if the photos are in good shape.
The VuPoint also has a color LCD display that is even bigger than the one on the vupoint solutions magic wand portable. It comes with an autofeed docking station that has an Automatic Feeder so you can use the scanner in both scanning modes. For multiple scans, the wand is faster but the docking station is easier to use. Note that this docking station won’t turn this handheld scanner into a full desktop scanner as the speed and features are not even close to what an office scanner offers, but it will easily scan documents and receipts.
ClearClick
Product | Images / Minute | Format | Connectivity | Max. document size | ADF Tray | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
ClearClick | 12 ipm | A4 | USB | 8.5 in. x 47 in. (215 x 1193 mm) | Yes | 0.9 lb. (0.4 kg) | Click for more info |
ClearClick will include a 4GB multimedia card in the package to get you started and like the others, you can save your JPG, TIFF, PNG or BMP files directly to it. Like the other devices here it scans directly to SD card but not to USB flash drives. It is a very light scanner, weighing just 0.9 lbs. The software on the ClearClick comes with with automatic color mode detection, image rotation and automatic cropping.
This mobile color page scanner has TWAIN support, instead it uses a native driver interface, so no chances of connecting it with existing 3rd party scanning apps. We covered the ClearClick with more details and a complete product description in a separate article on our website. This mobile scanner is compatible with both Windows and Mac devices.
IRISCan Anywhere 5
Product | Images / Minute | Format | Connectivity | Max. document size | ADF Tray | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
IRISCan Anywhere 5 | 16 IPM | A4 | Wi-Fi, USB | 8.27 x 11.69 in (210 x 297mm) | No | 0.73 lb. (0.33 kg) | Click for more info |
No duplex mode either on this portable mobile scanner, it might be that at the moment there is no portable color duplex scanner that saves to SD card and has a single-pass duplex function. Image enhancement features are present in the software that the Iriscan comes with in the package: Automatic color detection and image cropping together with a background cleaning function that smooths out the background of the photos digitally. Of course, no ADF tray on this scanner either, just an automatic document feeder.
This mobile document scanner is one of the lightest scanners you can buy, it weighs just 0.73 lbs. The manufacturer says it just accepts plain paper, so there might be problems when you run a business card or plastic card through the scanner. This scanner too comes with Optical Character Recognition software, this time from obviously ReadIris. I have tried the ReadIris software and i personally think it is very bad. I would recommend anything else. Character confidence in text recognition is very low and it doesn’t detect layouts as well as the ABBYY software. That being said, it does convert scanned images to editable text and searchable PDF files. It is possible that you might not feel a difference if you are not working with complex documents.
VuPoint Magic Wand
Product | Images / Minute | Format | Connectivity | Max. document size | ADF Tray | Weight | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
VuPoint Magic Wand | 40 IPM | A4 | Hi-Speed USB 2.0 | 8.5 in. x 98 in. (215 x 2489 mm) | No | 0.47 lb. (0.21 kg) | Click for more info |
What portable scanner with SD Card support should I buy?
Our favorite scanner is either the Doxie Go or the VuPoint ST470. We think they are the best compromise between scanning quality, speed, integrated OCR and customer satisfaction after 6 months of usage. There are also a few scanners that will scan to memory sticks (USB flash drives) and we have covered them in a different article. If you don’t need the SD card feature, we can recommend a few models, some of which also have duplex scanning: The fujitsu scansnap s1300i duplex document scanner, brother ADS-1700 mobile scanner, scansnap ix100, epson workforce es-50, Epson workforce es-55r, epson workforce es-300w, flippal mobile scanner with an included 4gb SD Card and USB adapter and the avision portable scanner. We also reviewed flatbed scanners on our website, like the epson perfection v39, canon canoscan lide 220 and the Perfection V600 photo scanner film slide scanner which can scan personal photo slides and negatives and if you are interested in those and other related products like color photo scanners: epson fastfoto ff680w wireless high-speed photo scanner and the plustek photo scanner called the ePhoto z300. None of them have an SD card option but they are great for scanning photos. Our Score
