The speed for this scanner is up to 8 images per minute simplex (single-sided scanning) or 10.6 IPM duplex (double-sided scanning). This is a pretty good speed as most of the portable scanners that have a similar price have 9.2 IPM. The portable scanner is up to A4 in size. A4 is the ISO Format that manufacturers use to define scanning areas. An A4 is 210 by 297 mm but the actual size of the scanning area might be slightly larger.

The Brother DS-920DW scans at resolutions up to 600 × 600 dpi optical with fast color and black scan speeds of up to 8ppm, or 5ppm in duplex scanning mode. Most portable scanners that have a similar price have an Optical Resolution of 600 DPI (Dots per inch).

The Brother DS920W is a wireless mobile color scanner that offers multiple connectivity options. Wi-Fi connectivity and the included 4 GB SD memory card provide users the flexibility to scan documents to Wi-Fi enabled computers and to Apple or Android mobile devices. The DS-920DW features drivers interface TWAIN and SANE(5) that helps in integrating with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. The maximum document size that can be scanned with this scanner is 8.5 in. x 32 in. (215 x 812 mm). Its sensor type is Dual CIS. Most portable scanners for this price have the following CIS and CCD sensor types. The CCD is considered to be superior, as it does not require perfect contact with the document to be able to scan the document clearly. It can also capture documents that are crumpled or wavey. The CIS or contact image sensor usually requires the document to touch the scanning glass perfectly to achieve a perfect scan. Still, the CIS or CMOS sensors are cheaper and lighter in weight.

The paper thickness that it can resist is 16 lb. To 28 lb. (23.68 – 41.44 gsm). Sometimes the paper can be thicker than the standard paper. So the larger thickness helps in scanning thicker documents. Also, it is easy to scan damaged paper with a scanner that allows this feature.

Features for Productivity

The scanner allows single-pass 10.6 IPM duplex capability, ideal for quickly capturing documents, photos, receipts, laminated IDs, and business cards. This feature gives this scanner an edge over other scanners as 90% of scanners with a similar price do not have Duplex Scanning. Duplex scanning means that the scanner can scan both sides of a document at the same time. Having this option definitely increases the productivity of the scanner and reduces time and effort for any user.

One of the negative things about this scanner is that it doesn’t feature Automatic Color Detection. Most of the scanners with similar price offer this feature. Also, it doesn’t offer Automatic Image Rotation that is necessary when the documents are portrait and landscape. Other necessary features that this scanner doesn’t have are Automatic Image Cropping and Background Removal. Automatic Image Cropping adjusts the documents that are not sized correctly while Background Removal produces a clean white background. .

Quality of images

Unfortunately, the scanner doesn’t feature Automatic Deskew. This feature helps in aligning the documents. It also doesn’t feature Punch Hole Removal.

However, it does support OCR ( Optical Character recognition ). This really helps in searching for your scanned document.

After unboxing you will find that Brother DS-920DW doesn’t have ADF Tray. An ADF or automatic document feeder tray is that part of the scanner where you stack documents, and the scanner feeds them automatically during the scanning process.

Its dimensions are just 12.1 in. x 1.6 in. x 2.6 in.(30.7 x 4 x 6.6 cm). A lower dimension helps users move the machine easily and take less space on the desk.

This portable scanner only weighs 1.17 lb. (0.53 kg) so it is very easy to carry it. The included software for this scanner are Nuance PaperPort 12 SE (Windows), Presto! PageManager 9 (Mac), Presto! BizCard 6, DSmobileCapture, Button Manager V2 (Windows) and BR-Receipts.
