Let’s first start with the already popular Fujitsu Scansnap S1300i. First of all the interface of this scanner is not Twain or Isis, it’s the proprietary driver interface Fujitsu calls Scansnap.

Let’s start with the basic settings of this portable scanner. For example, the scanning speed is around 24 images per minute, which means the speed is relatively high, especially for a small portable device.

The CIS sensor has to provide enough quality to get your documents scanned on the fly, in a very clear way. I don’t expect you to have any problems in this sense.

One of the things that I don’t really understand about this scanner is the relatively low thickness of the documents that it should scan. Between 17 to 28 lb is good, but I was expecting a larger value in this sense.

But I will say that even though I was hoping for a wider range of thickness, I can understand the limitations, considering it has an ADF tray included, meaning you can insert more than one document at once.

The feature that I really like about this unit is the automatic image rotation. This means that you don’t have to overthink how to insert the document for scanning. Just pop it in, and there you go.

The Scansnap S1100i is another Fujitsu scanner that works directly through the Scansnap driver interface. It’s a bit slower than the previous model we presented, running at around 16 images every minute.

One of the main issues of this scanner is that it does not offer automatic duplexing. This will be a bit of a problem when you have documents printed on both sides of the paper.

That means taht everytime you will have such documents, first you will have to scan one side, and then turn the paper for the other one.

Besides that, there is another key element missing. The ADF tray does not exist, or to be more precise, Fujitsu has made this scanner work just through manual feed.

The sensor used in this scanner is identical to the CIS sensor used in the S1300i. What this means is generally a decent scanning quality and pretty good file output.

The software included revolves around the Scansnap Home and Abbyy Finereader for Scansnap. These are pretty much good enough for most of the tasks you will use the scanner for.

One thing I really like about this device is the low weight of the equipment. At 0.8 lbs this is much lower when compared to other devices.

The Doxie GO SE is one of those scanners that are really worth the money. Most of the users leave rave reviews for it.

First of all it’s really cheap. By this I mean it’s cheap for the functionalities it offers and considering the really good response from the users.

Regarding the specs, it’s an A4 portable document scanner that is able to scan around 7 images every minute. It does not have duplex scanning, but I guess at this price, you really can’t expect it to have.

It comes with a Twain driver interface, which means for those working in companies with internal software, it’s quite easy to capture documents on the go and integrate them directly with the scanner driver. This means something like an auto upload, based on scanning settings and predefined procedures.

It features both the automatic image rotation and automatic image cropping. These 2 combined really help when you don’t want to constantly adjust the size and also don’t want to manually align each document individually.

A good thing about this scanner is the OCR feature. It’s embedded in the scanner, which means you can scan directly to searchable PDF from any physical document.

The Canon ImageFormula P215 is an A4 portable scanner that comes with automatic duplexing of documents.

This means that everytime a document passes through the scanner, both sides of the paper are captured at once. The result is an automatic increase in scanning speed, reaching around 15 sheets or 30 images every minute.

Canon has fitted this scanner with a driver that will work through TWAIN or ISIS interface. This will allow you to transfer scanned data using the USB 3.0 directly to custom developed software that is built to handle these drivers.

What I love about this device is that it comes with most image processing features. One setting, the automatic rotation does not seem to be present, although you can check this in the user manual, just to be on the safe side.

You can integrate this scanner directly with the new CaptureOnTouch software, and the LITE version, which is built into the scanner. Creating a searchable PDF from your scan should be no problem when using the OCR software delivered with the device.

The Epson ES-60W is the only portable scanner in this field which can work through a wifi connection. This is really a positive, especially considering the price. It does not cost a lot.

Besides the feature, the scanning speed is quite low. Especially given the fact it does not feature an automatic duplex mode, the scanner will need around 4 seconds to convert an A4 document to digital format.

The sensor of the scanner is CIS, which allows for the scanner to be smaller, lighter and most importantly cheaper than a CCD scanner. Even so, the image quality should be quite good, considering that most of the time you’ll be scanning documents.

This device comes bundled with the Nuance OCR engine, which is specifically designed to do optical character recognition for your scanned documents. While this is a good solution for OCR, you also need to deliver high quality scans to do its job properly.

For this, the scanner has been fitted with automatic deskew, automatic cropping, but not with a background removal option. That would have been a good addition to improve the scanning quality.

Which is the best portable scanner of 2020?

We will definitely go with the DOXIE GO SE on this one. It’a a really solid product, it doesn’t cost a lot, and you’ll find good reviews for it online. Not to mention that it was sold in high numbers, so the chance of finding information on forums, is much more likely.

What I don’t like about this scanner are 2 separate things. First of all is the low scanning speed, which is around 7 sheets every minute. This means slightly under 10 seconds for one sheet. I would have loved for it to be faster. Another thing I would have liked is a duplex feature, but I guess at this price, simplex will do.

The other choice I would go for is the Canon ImageFormula P215. It’s sligthly more expensive, but it does have some extra features. For example it has auto duplex and will scan around 15 sheets per minute. This is not bad, and given the ADF tray included, it could be a great purchase.

What do you think is the best portable scanner of 2020?
