  • Improvement of scanning speed, now at 40 PPM in simplex and 80IPM in duplex mode.

  • Streaks correction is now available as standard, which wasn’t the case before.

  • An improved Daily Duty Cycle of around 6000 sheets per day, which makes it very robust.

  • There are no smart separation methods, such as automatic document separation or barcode recognition.

Fujitsu ScanSnap IX1400 Datasheet Explained

The Scansnap IX1400 is as expected an A4 document scanner. It uses the same chasis as the IX1500, but it’s missing the now famous touchscreen. The scanning area is a bit larger than A4 to be more precise, at 8.5 by 14.2 inches.

What I really like about Fujitsu, and is included with the Scansnap i1400, is the carrier sheet. This sheet allows you to scan A3 documents, by folding the A3 sheet in two. Practically you are scanning an A4 on both sides and the software handles the stitching.

As with the other Fujitsu Scansnap models, you can expect a good quality for the scans. Resolution should be around 600dpi optically. This is achieved through a CIS sensor, which makes the device very light and small in size.

The scanning speed has been increased from the old model, the IX1500, and is now around 40 pages per minute. Being a duplex scanner, this means that when scanning both sides at the same time, you can reach 80 images per minute.

One of the things that really impresses me is the daily duty cycle. This has been increased to around 6000 sheets per day. At this duty cycle, you can expect to do quite some serious scanning. .

Specs for paper handling

Just like with most Scansnaps, multifeed detection is available. The scanner is fitted with an Ultrasonic sensor. This works by detecting overlapping pages that go through the scanner at the same time.

At that moment, the scanner beeps, and can either stop or continue the scanning process. We always prefer to stop the scanning and check whether that was a real or falsely detected multifeed.

One of the features we really love is the long document scanning mode. I must admit that personally I am a big fan of it, and use it quite a lot. I don’t know why, but there always seems to be that odd long document every now and then. .

Fujitsu ScanSnap IX1400 accesories unboxing

At 3.4 kg the scanner is not a heavy one. It’s not ultra light, but it’s a nice weight. You can definitely move it around easily, without any back pains.

The scansnap models have always been small and nimble. This is no stranger to the IX1400. The scanner is small enough to fit on just about any desk or a document shelve.

With the software, the bundle offered with the scanner is pretty impressive. Best thing about it is the Abbyy Finereader Sprint. This OCR app let’s you convert the scanned images into searchable formats, such as PDF, WORD, RTF or even excel files..

Features for Productivity

Regarding the productivity features of the scanner, there isn’t much that is missing.

Automatic cropping and rotation are included. While the automatic cropping is somewhat standard in most scanners, the rotation is a helpful feature. Especially in Fujitsu scanners, this feature works like a charm, rarely giving errors.

Automatic Color detection is great to have when you have mixed batches for scanning. Such a feature reduces the size of the files generated, because it only scans in color what needs to be scanned in color.

The blank page detection is a must have these days. You don’t want to scan in simplex and miss the other side of the page. At the same time, you don’t want to scan duplex and have a lot of blank pages. This feature is great at finding the middle ground, so only images with content are scanned.

One feature that is missing though is the multi stream feature. I guess for such a small scanner, this won’t be an issue. Still, some would say this is a negative point nonetheless..

Quality of images

As we have mentioned before, Fujitsu is probably the manufacturer with the highest quality of scanning. Therefore, you would expect it to have background cleaning as a standard feature. And the feature exists, together with the edge correction feature.

Another thing I expect from a scanner is the deskew setting. This must be done automatically these days, you can’t hire people to straighten images manually.

The hole punch removal setting is not available and that is probably one of the negative aspects of this device. I would have loved it to be available, but for that you’ll have to buy an FI model.

One setting that is available, and you would never expect it, is the streaks correction. On such a small scanner this is rarely available. I just love it when I don’t have to be focused on cleaning the scanning glass all the time. This feature definitely helpes in this sense..

Extra Features

There are also other features you should know that are available. Manual feeding is available, and especially for scanning with a carrier sheet, this is very helpful.

The productivity features revolving around document separation and barcode recognition are missing. Fujitsu only offers these with the higher end models, like the FI. Still, I think that for most tasks, you won’t miss them too much.

Last but not least we have the OCR. This is included with the Abbyy Finereader Sprint, which is a LITE version of the standard Finereader version. It does not offer a full zonal OCR, but it will work on basic recognition tasks..
