The good:,Great software, light weight and quite small in size, great OCR
The bad: Could be faster, ADF tray is a bit small with a capacity of just 10 sheets

What’s so special about it?
The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i document scanner offers fast scanning speeds of up to 24 images per minute, it can take 10 pages in it’s Automatic Document Feeder ADF tray and is compatible with both Windows PCs and Macs. A neat feature is the one button OCR which basically scans and converts your document to a searchable PDF with just one click. Because it has OCR you can also convert your documents to Word files or Excel files. The ScanSnap S1300i works great for scanning photos also. It has the ScanSnap sync and ScanSnap Connect modules specific to this line of scanners. All ScanSnap models come with integrated productivity software and since we’re talking about productivity, it’s worth mentioning that they are far ahead in terms of this against Flatbed scanners. It can also sync with Google Drive, so you can send all your scans to the cloud, not just to your normal ScanSnap folder. It also comes with a Cardminder business card scanning software. Now i’m not sure who uses this one these days because there’s phone apps that can do this for you on the spot. You have to be one of those really organised people to come back at your desk after a conference and start scanning your business cards. So in my opinion, a bit pointless today. The ScanSnap organizer is a much more useful tool because you will mostly be scanning documents with it.Fujitsu Scansnap S1300i Datasheet Explained
Let’s have a look at the specs of this mobile scanner. The scan speed that it can reach is 24 IPM. That’s not very good. For the same money, you can easily get portable document scanners that will do 40 color images per minute. So it’s safe to say speed is not it’s main party piece. But it’s a reliable scanner, so it’s capable of scanning 24 images per minute without jams or interruptions.
The media handling format is A4 as with other scanners, no surprises here, but it’s good to know it can also scan small papers business cards. The same for resolution, it’s 600dpi grayscale & color, or what I like to call “more than enough”, especially if you’re using the ScanSnap for receipts (It also has a special ScanSnap receipt software exactly for that). Most papers that you will find in file cabinets of media relations companies, don’t need 600 dpi, I can assure you that. Photo scanning is great at 600 dpi, but for documents, most of the time a scan quality of 300 dpi is enough. If you need to use a high pixel density then the Canon Canoscan lide scanner line is perfect for that. Connectivity lets it down a bit, because it can only connect via USB 2.0 & 1.1. These are not the fastest usb ports, but it does come with a USB Bus Power cable included at least because when you connect it to the PC, it becomes USB powered. It doesn’t have wi-fi. For a portable scanner, I would expect a wi-fi connection as standard, but Fujitsu decided to not implement a scan to mobile feature.
As far as TWAIN goes, if you’re expecting that, don’t. It uses the proprietary ScanSnap interface. Here’s a long explanation from them as to why they do this and what they are trying to achieve with this if you have the time: Why ScanSnap doesn’t have TWAIN drivers. The image sensor that they put in this is a typical CIS with an LED light source, a common one found on portable scanners. There’s actually 2 CIS sensors in it because it’s a model that can scan both sides of the paper at the same time.
The maximum scan size is 8.5 in. x 34. in, or 215 x 863 mm for our readers in Europe.
Let’s look a bit at the range of paper thickness, because here it’s a bit interesting: It’s between 64gsm and 100gsm. That’s not that versatile. Sure, it will handle 95% of the papers you throw at it, but it might pose problems with thicker cards. .
Features for Productivity
Like I mentioned before, the scanner is able to digitize both sides of a sheet at the same time. For this price, it’s quite normal to have this, so whatever scanner you’ll want to get in this price range, there’s an 80% chance it will come fitted with duplex for double-sided scanning.
It also comes equipped with intelligent scan correction features: Automatic Color Detection (which can separate between color and black & white scanning modes automatically, without you having to specifically point out which is which. Quite useful. There’s image rotation, which can tell if you put the document upside down through the scanner (Doesn’t even complain, it just rotates it).
Having all of these autos fitted usually doubles or triples your productivity. It’s a shame it doesn’t have file scan background removal though, but for this price not many scanners have this. .
Quality of images
The mobile color scanner Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i also comes equipped with automatic deskew. That’s a great helper because it straightens out the pages that are scanned. It doesn’t have punch hole removal, but then again, this is not an archive scanner so I don’t think you will care much.
Of course, it comes equipped with OCR and the technology built into the ScanSnaps is from the russian software maker, ABBYY. They are probably the best in the commercial industry, so basically best of what the average individual can buy. This OCR technology will help you scan to editable Word and Excel files out of your scans, not just output PDF and JPEG images. .
Fujitsu Scansnap S1300i accesories unboxing
I’d just like to remind you that the Fujitsu ScanSnap s1300i portable color duplex document scanner comes with an ADF tray, just that it’s a bit small with a capacity of only 10 pages. It’s a tiny bit heavier than other scanners in it’s price range but we are talking about a difference of 0.2 lbs, so not a huge difference.
The scanner comes with some software bundled such as ScanSnap Home with the ScanSnap Manager software and like i mentioned before, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap software for optical character recognition. The ABBYY software is superior to the software found on the Epson workforce line. The ScanSnap Document Software line-up is pretty strong and helps you upload digital scans automatically to cloud storage accounts like Google Drive.
As far as we know, there is no protection plan for insuring the Fujitsu ScanSnap, just the normal warranty. The scanner includes an AC Adapter because it is ac powered and USB Cable which works on a PC or macs. Power consumption is rated at 9 Watt and it’s compatible with worldwide power sources. It’s also worth mentioning that it has a physical scan button. .
