Epson ES-400 Review | This scanner has a great optional extra!

The good: The Epson Workforce ES400 duplx document scanner has a decent scan speed of around 70 images per minute when scanning duplex, while featuring both an USB and Ethernet connectivity

The bad: The ADF document feeder will only hold 50 sheets and the OCR results can be pretty average from time to time

Is it worth buying? Considering that the scanner does get up to 1200dpi, it offers most features such as auto crop, blank page detection and background removal, it does it’s job quite well. And it also has a great price! How much does it cost now?

Epson ES-400 Datasheet Explained

The Epson Workforce ES400 duplex document scanner can convert most of your A4 or letter documents. It will scan a bit above this dimension, getting close to 8.30 inches by 11.70 inches.

The Epson ES-400 can achieve an optical scanning resolution of around 600dpi. You will most likely use your scanner at around 200 or 300dpi.

This device is scanning using a CIS sensor. It stands for contact image sensor and it’s a cheaper alternative than a CCD. It will also take less space than most CCD units.

As you can see, the scanner comes with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0. The biggest thing about this scanners connectivity is the optional Ethernet connection. I am sure that this is the cheapest scanner to feature it, and it’s an option I would highly suggest you get.

With a scan speed of 35ppm in simplex and 70ipm in duplex mode, you can be sure that this scanner will scan stacks of paper of reasonable volumes quite easily.

Epson rates this document scanner at 4000 sheets every day. You will definitely scan less each day, but it’s good to know that the machine can reach that occasionally.

Being a smaller scanner, the only driver interface offered with this device is TWAIN. I guess for most web developers this should be enough.

Replacing the feed rollers is necessary every 200.000 scanned documents. Now this will vary, based on the type paper you scan, but for bond paper it should get to that volume.

Specs for paper handling

To easily scan stacks of paper you will need a good ultrasonic double-feed detection sensor. This detects any documents that are stuck together and are being fed simultaneously, no matter the scan mode you are in.

The feeder type used in this device will hold around 50 pages of bond sheets at a max document size of A4.

The weight of the documents you feed into the scanner should be between 10lb. to 59lb.

At the same time, feel free to scan documents that are 240 inches long, with the long document mode.

Epson ES-400 accessories unboxing

This is a small scanner by most standards and the exact size is 6.6 by 11.5 by 6.9 inches. The input tray might affect these sizes a bit, but it’s only a minor thing.

The Epson ES-400 is weighing about 8.1 lbs, which is quite light even for an A4 scanner.

The bundled software of this Epson includes the Epson Scan 2 and the Epson ScanSmart Software. There is also other software included, such as the Nuance OmniPage OCR, and NewSoft Presto! BizCard.

Features for Productivity

The Automatic Page Size detection is a setting that still amazes me today. It works very well with the Epson ES-400 scanner and will do auto crop quite well.

The automatic image rotation allows you to feed a mix of portrait and landscape documents in the document feeder. This will correct the orientation automatically and won’t slow down the scanning too much.

This device has auto color detection available directly through the scanner driver. It will allow you to easily handle mixed batches that include both color and bitonal documents.

I still remember when I first tried the blank page detection setting on a scanner. It has evolved through time and it still develops through every driver update.

One option that is missing and I would have loved to have it is the Multi Image Output or multi stream as it’s called with other devices.

I guess you could use auto color and solve the issue for mixed color batches, but for two copies you are left with scanning in color and using different software to post-process the images in grayscale or bitonal.

Quality of images

The ES-400 scanner comes with a lot of image adjustment settings that you can use to improve the quality of the scans.

There is first the background cleaning setting, which optimizes the background color of your scanned document, turning most of them to clean white.

You have the edge correction feature, which is great when you have documents with non-regular margins, such as crumpled or torn paper.

I am sure you know the deskew feature. This aligns each document automatically, whether this is caused by poor feeding of the scanner or just documents in bad condition.

The punch hole removal feature is available with this scanner. It’s of great help, especially for office documents that have been perforated for wire binding.

Don’t be surprised, but this Epson does not have a streak correction filter, which would have helped during those long batches when you just don’t want to stop the scanner and clean it every single minute.

Extra Features

When scanning fragile documents, this Manual Feeding setting will help you scan safely with the Epson ES-400.

The manual feeding mode is the safety net to use when you have a really poor paper to scan or just documents that are fragile.

The scanner comes with automatic document separation, which can be enabled by the driver. It works in 2 ways, either by using barcode discovery or by separating at regular intervals. There is also the option of patch codes or simply using blank pages.

Besides the standard OCR engine that allows for full OCR on each page, this device is bundled with software that can recognize and index fields. It’s a great tool to have when you are scanning forms or you want to directly process standardized documents.
