What’s so special about it?

The Epson Workforce DS-80W is a small and very fast portable document scanner. It has Wireless connectivity and is compatible with PC, Mac, iOS or Android devices. Changing between Wi-fi and USB mode happens seamlessly. The scanner also has a small LCD screen which can show you what is the status of the wi-fi but also the battery charge. The scanner comes bundled with OCR software and document management software. You can save editable text and searchable PDF files with both the Epson Scan and Epson document capture pro app with the included ocr and document conversion features. You get a lot of features for the price that Epson charges for the device. The speed on the Epson is very good as well. The device can scan 15 images per minute.

Epson DS-80W Datasheet Explained

The Epson DS-80 portable scanner can digitize 15 images in a minute, provided you can feed them fast enough to the scanner. Fast scanning speeds given that this is not a duplex scanner. Of course to achieve that speed you have to be fast and accurate and always have to prepare the next sheet as its inserted. It can digitize papers that are up to A4 in size and the maximum resolution that you can achieve with it is 600dpi. 600dpi will make your documents and even high-quality photos look fantastic. You will be able to tell very fine details in the picture.

There are many connectivity options on this device, it has Wi-fi (802.11 b/g/n) and USB connection with a USB cable included. The USB doesn’t have groundbreaking speed, it is a basic USB 2.0. This is more than enough today to connect it to any device you may have. The fact that the scanner is portable and it has wi-fi makes this a very powerful combination. It automatically detects connectivity so it switches between USB and wifi connections seamlessly. It can also wirelessly scan critical documents to Android and IOS mobile devices.

You will also find a TWAIN interface on the Epson. The scanner can be connected and integrated with custom and specialized scanning applications. This wireless portable scanner has an optical resolution of 600 DPI. The sensor that Epson put in this device is a CIS (Contact Image Sensor). This is typical for most portable scanners.

One thing that I particularly appreciate about this Epson is the media thickness that it can take. Just like the DS-70, the scanner can handle papers up to 270gsm in thickness. .

Features for Productivity

Just like on the DS-70, Epson did not equip this scanner with a dual CIS sensor, so you cannot scan duplex. If the paper is printed on both sides, you just have to run it 2 times through the scanner.

The Epson is capable of detecting if the document is printed in color or black & white automatically, it can also detect if you put the document upside down in the scanner. Along with these features, it also has an automatic image cropping feature. Another feature that we enjoy is the background cleaning feature. It will make the background whiter, especially if the document is dirty.

It is a usb and battery-powered wireless scanner. It has a built-in rechargeable battery that takes approximately 2 hours to fully charge.

This wireless duplex document scanner comes with a clever LCD display that shows you some basic information like the battery level and the wireless status.

The daily duty cycle that Epson says you should not exceed is 300 scans per day. .

Quality of images

Using automatic deskew, the ds-80w document scanner will straighten your pages automatically, no more skewed images. Epson was also careful to add an OCR feature for creating text and searchable pdfs in the scanner. This will allow you to convert scanned images to searchable PDF, Word Doc, ePub or even Excel files.

The Document Capture app which is part of the software included scans documents to several file formats: JPEG, TIF, BMP, PNG and PDF. When you create the PDF file, the device scans into one file all the pages that you feed. .

Epson DS-80W accesories unboxing

One downside is that Epson did not equip the DS-80W with an ADF tray. Like the DS-70, it has an automatic document feeder, but not an ADF tray. The DS-70 and DS-80W were actually both launched at the same time. In automatic feed mode, it still accepts each new sheet manually. I personally would have loved one and it’s something that for me matters, but given that portability is essential here I can see why they thought of skipping it. The software combines multipage scans as you feed them through the scanner.

The Epson DS-80W is also a very light document scanner because it weighs just 0.66 lbs compared to other mobile scanners in this price range which weighs 1.1 lbs. They packed in a lot of features in such a light scanner. Epson calls this the “lightest wireless mobile single-sheet-fed document scanner in its class”.

Some of the scan software you will receive with the DS-80W includes Epson Scan 2, Document Capture Pro and Document Capture for Mac. Firmware updates are done through the USB connection. The included software is compatible with Windows and Mac OS X.

The power consumption when it is on battery is 4.5W. Epson will offer you a 3-year limited warranty on the Epson DS-80w wireless portable document scanner.

What do real users say?

People love this scanner because it’s extremely light. It’s probably one of the lightest scanners on the market. As long as you don’t have to scan a lot every day, you should be fine with this scanner. A regular complaint is about lines appearing on scans. Those appear if you did not clean the scanner enough or often enough. To overcome this, just make it a habit to give the scanning area a wipe with a cloth before you do any kind of scanning. Just like you make sure your phone lens is clean, you need to treat the scanner in the same way. Users have reported that they are happy with the mobile app and with the way the scanning app is capable of organizing their documents. <!–
