Doxie Q | Our review and opinion on it

What’s so special about it?

The Doxie Q is an affordable and portable document scanner that you can take with you everywhere. It doesn’t need a computer to function, it’s standalone and has a rechargable battery. Doxie claims that one charge of the battery will be able to last you 1,000 scans. The scanner is quite cleverly built, it has a lid on top. When you open the lid, you reveal the Automatic Document Feeder. The ADF tray can hold up to 8 pages in it. I find this system to be a smart and compact way of putting an ADF tray into a scanner, but without making it big. The Doxie Q also has built-in WiFi, so you can connect to it using your laptop, phone or tablet. WiFi is a must-have feature and the Doxie Q scanner does not disappoint.

Doxie Q Datasheet Explained

The Doxie Q photo scanner can digitize documents at a scan speed of 8 pages per minute. This is definitely not the fastest scanner as other scanners in it’s price range will easily be 2 times faster.

You can scan paper sizes that are up to A4 in size (Letter). The scanner comes bundled with WiFi and USB. This is my favourite connection bundle because it covers all of the devices and possibilities. It can run from different power sources, it can be battery powered or connected to your computer via USB cable.

This device for scanning documents also comes with a TWAIN interface, so Doxie here were open to having the scanner integrated with custom made scanning applications.

This Doxie scanner is able to scan a maximum width of 8.5 inches, but the maximum length is quite a bit longer at 30 inches. One interesting thing about this scanner is that it uses a CCD sensor. This is a very interesting choice as most other manufacturers have gone with CIS sensors on their scanners. CCD is a superior sensor to CIS in terms of photo image quality. This sensor is capable of scanning at 600dpi. This resolution combined with the CCD technology means that your photos will come out perfectly on this scanner.

As far as paper thickness is concerned, this document scanner with automatic feeder allows you to scan plain paper as being compatible, so this raises some questions about business cards and thicker paper..

Features for Productivity

The Doxie Q does not have duplex scanning, instead it has a simple feature that lets you scan one side of the sheets then you flip them and then you can scan the other side and the software will position them correctly into the PDF file.

This mobile color page scanner has features integrated to improve scan quality like automatic color detection, which helps to automatically determine if the scanned image is black & white or color. There’s also an automatic image rotation feature, so you can run the document through the scanner upside down and it will tell how it should be and rotate it.

The image cropping feature built into the Doxie Q also helps you save time, because it will crop the outside black area by itself. The Doxie Q also has the ability to save the scans on an SD Card. You just plug the SD Card into the scanner and you’re done..

Quality of images

This portable scanner has a deskew feature, with which it can rotate images even by 1 degree, so that they look straight. The Doxie Q comes with OCR inlcuded and not just any OCR, the one from ABBYY, one of the best OCR companies in the world. We use technology from ABBYY all the time in our scan center to create the DOC and ePub files and it’s our go-to OCR software.

If you haven’t had OCR before on a mobile scanner, you will be pleased by how easy and fast it is to convert scanned images into searchable PDFs and Word documents..

Doxie Q accesories unboxing

The Doxie portable wireless scanner comes with an automatic document feeder ADF tray that can hold up to 8 documents in it, so contracts, invoices, receipts should easily fit in the tray. Users have complained that the ADF tray is not solid enough and even though they didn’t break it, they mentioned that it feels fragile.

This scanner is very light, weighing just 1.8 lbs. Most scanners in its price category weigh approximately 3 lbs. So it is compact and easy and you will be easily able to carry this scanner in your bag or backpack. It has 2 LEDs, one for the power button and one to tell you if its wifi connected to your PC.

Doxie bundles the classic Doxie software with the scanner that has one of the best interfaces and it is a scanner for Mac and PC and you can also scan to your Android or iOS mobile device using the Doxie app via Wifi. The software can save the digital images in JPEG format or multi-page PDF.

This scanner is in a price class where it faces quite strong competition. What do real users say?

Users love the software for being simple to use, but have complained that the OCR does not offer enough functionality. Most of the people who bought it, wish it had a duplex functionality, but they are happy with the fact that it can be easily carried and that the scanner is not expensive.
